The area around the hotel was unsafe, dirty and over-crowded. It was a nighmare trying to find a cab. There are not restaurants or shopping facilities close-by. The only shopping centre near by is the Mustafa Centre which though cheap, is very over-crowded and the staff is un-cooperative.

MRT is easy to use and a good way to get around, more information could be available at the hotel about bus pasess etc.
Watch out for scams when looking for electrical items, we found that we were quoted low prices for camcorders to get us into the shop, then basic things like cables and batteries were charged extra, also make sure you get the original box for electrical items. When we went back to complain after feeling we had been cheated, the shop owner would not exchage our goods saying, he does not have the box which he emptied 20 mins earlier.
There are some great museums worth visiting, including the History Museum.

Found the best means of transport was local taxi - very reasonable price. Harbour Cruise on "The Imperial Cheng Ho" with Afternoon Tea was excellent. Pack a folding suitcase. You will need this for all your shopping!! Be wary of made to measure tailors, their standard of work may not come up to expectations.
