Stayed at  Marina Mandarin Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
I had a particular purpose in visiting Singapore, otherwise, for Australians using the weak Oz dollar, it is not a value-for-money destination. Took guests to the Italian restaurant in the Pan Pacific, and had one of the worst meals of my life - we had discussions with the chef, but he couldn't seem to do much better - embarrassing when one is taking guests to subject them to such poor food. On top of that, a bottle of 1996 Penfolds wine was Singapore $110 ... hardly value for money, and typical of the LOW-range wine prices there, according to local friends. Singapore is clean and safe, apparently, but ... do we care?

Stayed at  Bintan Lagoon Resort - Bintan Island (Indonesia), Singapore.
Being a nature love, I would say that the beach is an excellent place. The wind is strong and the waves are inviting. Beware of the cunning WAVES!!! It almost turned sour when I was caught and had to struggle in the strong current! Without the help of a swimmer nearby and the lifeguard, I would have drowned. My HEROS!!! :)

If you are a fanatic about sunrise and sunset, you should note the SUNRISE! I had a wonderful view of the sun rising at 6 a.m. Bintan time. The scene is just too beautiful. I took many shots of it.

Try the SPA! Lots of massage packages to choose from. I went for their Traditional Indonesian Massage. It was an experience.

The food was fine, nothing extra ordinary. Well, muslims can feast as the food is Halal.

The last thing you should do is SHOPPING! If your intention is to shop, STAY AT HOME!!! Only thing that attracted me was their BATIK SARONGS (beach skirts).

I took a trip to Sentosa by taxi. The taxi driver was very helpful eventhough he has never driven to Sentosa before. I used taxi as my main transportation. It is not expensive and it is convenient. However, one thing that really disappointed me about taxi was my last trip to airport, the taxi driver charged me $24.40 even on the meter said $14.00. I asked him about the overprice, he said there was other charge for tollway as well.. I didn't really believe because I remember it was the same way as I came before and that cost me only $15.00. That was the only I disappointed about the taxi rate, make me disappointed about Singaporean. Anyway, Singapore people are very nice and helpful..

Stayed at  Phoenix Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
Little India (very good fun, Chinatown (very good to wander around), Colonial district and Raffles (don't miss having a drink there though the bill came to more than what we paid for any meal in Singapore), Night Safari (don't miss it), botanic Gardens (really nice, leave a full day, we had half, and wasn't nearly enough), Sentosa (took a discovery tour), Very Expensive for the price, Top points for the Cable Car ride, Musical Fountain (do stay back for it), Images of Singapore (very well done), Monorail ride ..all these were cheaper or included and excellent.

Very expensive attractions, especially Volcano Land, were a rip-off, a complete and absolute waste of time. Underwater world, not bad, but similar to may others; Discovery tours sold us Dolphin show, but then didn't take us there at all. Food is cheap and we ate in local and air-con foodcourts, drinks are fantastic and healthy and we averaged around 14 SGD for a family of 4 for a meal and about 4-5 for the drinks, extremely cheap.

Singapore on the whole is more expensive than Hong Kong. There are no bargains to be found anywhere. Best place to eat is on Cuppage Rd., behind the hotel. Good food at reasonable price. The rest of the places were ridiculous. Would never go back to Singapore and would not recommend either.

Stayed at  Tristar Inn Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
We visited Orchard Road shopping malls, Chinatown, Little India and the Changi Museum, Clark Quay, all worth a look at. The cable car over to Sentosa Island was not particularly interesting unless you want to look at building sights, and a lot of dockyard cranes. Sentosa Island was overpriced and a cheap imitation of Disneyworld, not worth a visit.

We found that taxi services were better and a lot quicker in comparison with the MRT, typical meter fares were $10.50 from the airport, and about $9.00 one way into the city. With the 10 minute walk to the MRT station from the hotel, in high humidity or through a frequent downpour, I would recommend using a taxi from the hotel to the first location, and then travelling on the MRT.

If taking small children to Singapore - forget any stroller/pushchair. There are too many stairs everywhere. For stopovers from Oz, take the kids to the zoo. Avoid the tours - use public transport (MRT and bus) it is easy even with under-5's.

Stayed at  Holiday Inn Park View, Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
During our 14 years of living and working in various Southeast Asian countries, we have often visited Singapore. This time, we have found a drastic change in the city-state: prices have doubled for virtually everything during the past four or five years; service and (food) quality has declined, and general attitudes resemble those often (but not always) found in Hong Kong. For our next "escape", we will give S'pore a miss, and try Bangkok, Taipei, or even (gasp) Hong Kong....

Stayed at  Summerview Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
the singapore zoo is just awesome...make sure you don't miss the night safari too....orchard in just amazing...the underwater world at sentosa...and the pink dolphins there are great...however, be more selective on the attractions at sentosa island...if you're muslim...food can be a slight problem...do take the river cruise tour and clarke quay...just splendid...best time to go is definitely june/july during the great singapore sale....

W Dobbin 01 July 2001
Stayed at  Swissotel Merchant Court - Singapore, Singapore.
Recommended restaurant: Gina's Peranakan (excellent Nonya food) Not recommended: Maharajah Indian (dismal food, grumpy service). Watch out for rip offs at the Satay Club, where they bring large portions even though you have asked for small etc.
