Stayed at  Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. The - Singapore, Singapore.
Singapore is a boring tourist destination. The rumors are true. Everything is clean. There were hardly any stray leaves on the ground. There was no smell at all. However there is not much here since it is so new. THere are just hundreds of malls. I can't believe that they managed to fit so many malls in such a small city. Nothing is cheap. If you like the prices in THailand and Indonesia and Malaysia, don't expect that here. Prices are nearly the same as the US. THe night safari was nice. BUt very hard to get to. 25 minutes on the subway and then 30 minutes on a local bus that tourists were completely confused about using. Singapore is Hong Kong if they demolished the whole island and then built everything new from scratch. I used Sing. as a short 3 day trip and went to TIoman Island, which is gorgeous, by 4 hour ferrry directly from Sing.

Stayed at  Shangri-La's Rasa Sentosa Resort - Singapore, Singapore.
Sentosa is one of the worst tourist traps in all of SE Asia. But my 7 year old daughter loved it.

T Gray 15 June 2002
Stayed at  Marina Mandarin Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
I really don't know why anyone would choose Singapore as a tourist destination when there are so many other interesting places in the region to visit. Sentosa is a major tourist trap and the beaches a polluted. Not only was there an oil spill recently of the coast (I learned this from locals as there were no signs on the beach warning people to stay out of the water), but the bay is full of barges, oil tankers, and other large ships. The only thing alive on that beach were people. I did not see a single crab or snail on the beach. Aside from the ships, this is a good indication that something is wrong with the water

Stayed at  Holiday Inn Park View, Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
Basically Singapore is super-efficient in all regards except one: Trying to get a taxi. At the wrong time it can be a wait of 45 minutes to an hour - even at a taxi stand. Equip yourself with a mobile phone that works in Singapore, and find out from a local contact a couple of taxi-call numbers.

Stayed at  Orchard Hotel Singapore - Singapore, Singapore.
Stay away from the cabbies at the airport offering 'tours'

W Young 21 April 2002
Stayed at  Panorama Regency Hotel - Batam Island (Indonesia), Singapore.
Nagoya itself is not a tourist destination. Business and/or nightlife only. Good bars/restaurants are Lucy's Oarhouse, The Red Cock, and The Bistro. The Bistro has the cleanest restrooms I have ever seen in a Southeast Asian nightspot outside a hotel. The Batam Cafe in the shopping mall next to the Melia Hotel is a good place to eat. Same kitchen as the hotel for a fraction of the price.

Getting to Batam was via the Penguin Ferry service from Singapore's World Trade Center. You must remember that bookings for the ferries close thirty minutes prior to departure, so get there quick. On your return at the Batam side whatever you do, do NOT give your passports to the touts claiming to be from the ferry office. Go up to the window and personally hand your passport to the people in the booth.

Stayed at  Asia Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
While there is nowhere else like Singapore, it seems to have lost some of the lustre from when I was there 10 years ago: not quite as clean, less historical charm, &c. Still lush and green, it has one of the best zoos and botanical gardens anywhere in the world. As Singaporeans love the outdoors, there is still a very outdoor charm within this bustling city, although we heard they are closing down the wonderful Newton Hawker Centre because it is on prime real estate, so don't know how long the outdoor charm will last.

D Ryan 13 April 2002
Stayed at  Keong Saik Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
Singapore is a place you stay on the way to somewhere else - not a holiday destination.

E Chu 02 February 2002
Stayed at  Panorama Regency Hotel - Batam Island (Indonesia), Singapore.
Not your fault, but Batam has very limited facilities for people used to big cities.

L Eric 28 January 2002
Stayed at  Robertson Quay Hotel - Singapore, Singapore.
Singapore is great for shopping especially for electronics and the like (got myself a PS2 and a digital camera). BUT make sure you do your homework first or you'll get fleeced. 2 shops quoted me S$420 and S$699 for the same PlayStation 2.
