I was fortunate to have a good local friend to show me around. I must say 3 to 4 days in singapore is more than enough. I practically saw most singapore in 3 days.
But a few places that most should not miss out when they're in Singapore are
1) the night safari
2) drinks at boat quay or clarke quay
3) a visit to the merlion statue
4) a stroll down orchard road if shopping is your thing
- (try to avoid to have the singapore sling at raffles hotel, most other local bars offer that drink if you really want to try it)
Be safe and have fun all!!

Don't go to Chinatown to buy electrical goods. Likely you try and rip you off.

Singapore changes a lot in two year period. But sales clerk's attitude remains unchange as they turn rude when a customer decided not to buy what they are pitching.

A quick way to get the orientation of any city including Singapore is to take one of those city tours organised by the Tourism Offices and the like. While they will always take you where they want you to part with money like factories, you get loads of valuable info and history of the city some of which is not written anywhere.

Do not use the maxicab service; they charge 35 dollars from the airport to hotel whereas normal cab is 8 dollars! MRT servce fast, cheap and efficient no need to hire cabs all the time.

Clarke and Boat Quay are always nice to visit. You can take a walk around the area in the early evening and then have a nice dinner in one of the many restaurants.
I also recommend a dinner at Alkaff's Mansion.
If you have more time go to Sentosa go to underwater world and the dolphin show and stay until the evening time to see the musical fountain.
I also really liked the show in Bird's park.
Another great location to visit is the Singapore Zoo, where they also have some entertaining animal shows.
Going around in Singapore is very easy. Around the city center and along Orchard Road you best take the Subway.
Be careful in the evenings. It is almost impossible to get a taxi around 8-11pm.

Singapores many shopping malls, tailors, electronic shops can not compete with the prices in Bangkok.
Be aware you still might be offered forgeries. If you can not tell the difference in between a quality product and a cheap and bad imitation you can still be ripped of ( e.g. the "quality" cloth from tailors, cashmere has to smell like burnt hair when you ignite it... Have a good look or take samples from home etc.)

Well, if you have to go to Batam for a trip, have a stay in Melia Panorama.
But always be on the watch in Batam. Lots of touts and little 'crooks' who are always ready to earn a fast buck from you, ESP if you don't speak their language. They may understand your English but they jolly well can pretend they can't answer!
A load of advice I got from various sites (including this one): Try to arrange for the hotel to get you transport. Else try taking the taxis outside the ferry terminal.
Be firm with the taxi drivers, demand for your destination, followed by "Charter" and the amount you wanna pay. Do not negotiate, walk away if he doesn't agree. "Charter" is important as it means he is NOT allowed to pick up any other passengers. If he does, GET OUT.
Melia Panorama isn't that far from Batu Ampar Ferry Terminal, I took a 30 minute walk.
In Nagoya, if you can, walk. Stay in the main roads, never walk the dark alleys. Be careful of the motorcycles and cars tho - traffic's a b*tch.
Beware of the touts in the ferry terminal when you are departing! Personally check-in your documents to the counter of your ferry company. NEVER EVER hand your paperwork to the fellas outside the counters! I made the mistake even tho I read about it... sigh... In the end, luckily I was only left with less than 5000 Rp (that's why I walked from Nagoya ;) ... so I guess it wasn't that big a loss to me. They originally demanded 20,000Rp!!!
Good luck and I'm sure you'll have more fun than I did! :D

After arriving in singapore at 12:30 a.m. I wondered out of orchard hotel on to orchard road. I was promptly "greeted" by four or five "tea hostess" every 20 feet. getting to the hotel was easy. since mrt subway was closed i took a "london" cab for $35 singapore rather than wait in line for a regular taxi. getting to the airport at 4:30 a.m. $24 singapore. i took the mrt subway everywhere. trains run every 5 min. food courts & hawker stands cheap!! fresh fruit drinks s$3.50 chicken rice s$3 small portion ice kachang s$2.50 to just a s$1.00. city is clean. people mind their own business. subways & stations clean. ngee ann city has a big department store takishimiryah? giant food court & kiosks on lower level. my fav food court-emerald on orchard rd.
