We only stayed in KL for 2 nights, spent our evenings in the Golden Triangle area (which is not near the hotel). We tried to visit the Petronas Towers but both times, they were not allowing any more people up, so if you want to visit - go at 8.30am. All the taxis did not want to use their meter, but we insisted every time - sometimes we had to get out of the taxi as the driver refused to use the meter. We were glad to leave KL which is an ugly, dirty, dusty, polluted city. (Glad to leave we then went by bus to Melaka and then went to Mersing and caught a boat to the beautiful Tioman island)

It's not my first visit to KL during the mega sale. I should say that this time round (Aug 2002), my shopping trip was quite fruitful. Places to go are: Mid Valley Mega Mall(big shopping centre), KLCC & LOT 10 & Starhill Plaza(for more branded goods), Sungei Wang(for cheaper bargains) & SOGO. One recommended place for Western food with reasonable prices is 'Coliseum Cafe & Hotel', is an authentic cowboy restaurant with long history, is at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman.
Taxis are the most convenient transport to get around and cheap if the drivers go by meter(the honest way). Will have to bargain at times with the cab drivers for they might quote an unreasonable fare for a short distance, if they refuse, just wait for another cab. This usually happens when you need to return to your hotel. Hopefully things improve when the MRT starts operating...

There is an abundance of taxis in JB. However, a word of caution regarding taxi-drivers who refuse to charge in accordance to their meters. For most locations within JB, the meter charge should not exceed RM 5 so before getting into the taxi, do ensure that you settle the price with the driver and the price should not exceed RM 5 by too much.

Chinatown(Good bargaining exercise, got some really good deals which captured a big part of our expenditure budget. Got to be constantly aware of pickpockets, more police presence preferred), Sunway Lagoon Shopping(Plenty of eating and shopping), KLCC (Mega Sales wasnt such a bargain after all), Bangsar(A bit small place), KL Sentral(Modern and Clean).
General mode of transport was Taxi (Cheap)
Although there was some unscrupulous taxi thugs who demanded a big sum of money for a short ride (RM15-30) or took a big detour acting innocent (From KLCC to Bangsar cost RM13 but our Return trip from Bangsar to Vistana with midnight charges were only RM6).
The tourist police should do a better job to catch these people.

malaysia in general has terrible attitude to service. KL has good hawker stalls that are clean and the food is excellent. otherwise the country is not as interesting as it's neighbour thailand.

Stayed at Swiss Garden Resort & Spa Damai Laut - Damai Laut - Lumut, Malaysia.

I was very disappointed that most of the activities that i wanted to try (such as the evening cruise and riverboat cruise) were not available even on the weekends. We were told by the recreation counter that they will return to us if there were enough number of people to run the cruise but they never got back to us.

Very annoying the way some taxi drivers wanted to negotiate on prices when fares should be metered. Concierge should intervene and discourage drivers from doing so.

KL is getting and easier and easier destination to visit now that the express is running from the airport into town. It claims a 28 minute transit but it feels faster than that even. Certainly beats the 45-60 min taxi trek. LRT is operational and very effective and the monorail statrts soon too. All in all a lot less stressful than doing battle with the taxi drivers.

Stayed at Swiss Garden Resort & Spa, Kuantan - Pahang, Malaysia.
|
The hotel is located about 8 km from Kuantan. We caught a taxi from the main bus terminal for 15 RM, although we were offered 10 RM and thought it too high (and were too embarrased to return to the same driver). From the hotel we used the hotel's van service to get to Cherating and stayed at the Tanjung Inn. The van driver was anxious to steer us towards the Residence Inn and when we refused he was rude. We paid 30RM for the ride but this probably could be cheaper with an outside taxi.
