Beware of taxi-drivers who don't go by the meter. Met several taxi-drivers who quoted ridiculously high prices. When I finally hopped on a cab which charge by the meter, the amt I paid was comparatively so much cheaper. Remember to ask before you hop on the cab, don't assume they all charge according to the meter!

Skip all the tourist-y sites, especially the RM$5 tourist info center at KOMTAR. Be careful of parking attendant impersonators. When visiting temples, do not be surprised by the commercial natures of some. There is also "Malaysia's 1st inclined lift" at Kek Lok Si temple. Do not take it. It costs RM$4 for a round trip. Climb the steps. At Penang Hill, make sure you do not have a packed itinerary. It's a half hour wait for the tram up.
For transportation, taking a bus is very affordable at 80 sen. Catching a cab would be much more dear and prone to drivers' overcharging as there are no metered cabs in Penang Island. Car rental is an advisable option against cabs.
In Penang, the focus should be on food. All food regardless taste great. Be it foodcourts, restaurants or roadside stalls. Visiting the stalls at Gurney is a must. They have a huge array of culturally diverse food for all palates.

Stayed at Langkawi Village Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.

Beach in front of this village is better than Pantai Cenang. In Pantai Cenang, you will get hurt on your feet if you swim without sandal due to broken shell.
I recommend you to stay Kuah town one or two day and you can enjoy duty free shopping and batik art. To stay at Kuah, City bay view hotel will be your best choice.
If you are a toy lover, please drop by the shop "original craft" which is located in near from underwater world (not the same building).

Stayed at Heritage Hotel Cameron Highlands - Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

The landscape in Cameron Highlands is beautiful although it is marred by lots of unsightly buildings. We liked the tea plantations very much. Most other visits were a little boring, especially the rose valley and the strawberry farm. There seems to be a lot of possibilities for jungle trekking. Unfortunately, it rained a lot as we were there.
For organising half day tours, CS Travel is a good company but they close very early in the evening (5:45). Avoid booking a tour directly from the bus station: the guide who was supposed to pick us up at the hotel never came and, although it was easy getting a refund, we lost one afternoon.

One piece of advice, do not go to Penang hill on a weekend / school holidays due to the massive queue and don't go before 8 am as the view is very hazy.

‚h was disappointing that transparency was bad for diving's going with a purpose. The person who goes with a purpose will be careful of the season (the diving).

Stayed at Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Everywhere we ate in KL was excellent - we love Malaysian food - except the seafood restaurant opposite the hotel. Food was fine, but they still use that old trick of putting nibblies on guests tables and then charging the poor silly tourist for something they didn't order. Given the prices they charge, this is not on and we will not eat there again.

Stayed at Tanjung Rhu Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
|
The location (beach) of the hotel is superb. Langkawi is a beautiful island with some possibilities for trips (rice fields, villages, rainforest, waterfalls, island hopping). One can easily rent a car, but it is not easy to arrange a motorbike in the neighbourhood of the hotel. There are sufficient sporting activities and tours via the hotel. For restaurants, you fully depend on the hotel! The quality of the food was generally ok and I especially liked the atmosphere of the beach fronted restaurant (mediterranean style). Note that in September and October, the weather is more rainy on Langkawi, though there is no clear raining season.

Stayed at Strawberry Park Resort - Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.

Cameron Highlands were beautiful. We took a bus from KL which was fine. Journey took about 4 hours and was very cheap. We hired a taxi for half a day to take us round the sights which was a great way to see everything. Beware of taxis after 9.00pm when fares seem to almost double.

Stayed at Swiss Garden Hotel, Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

the hotel is convenient to the downtown area. KL is undergoing a rather massive development boom - a lot of construction, disruptions and ugliness associated with construction sites. Should look good in a few years.
