Stayed at New World Courtyard Beijing - Beijing, China.
|
Beijing was great but the location of this hotel is not the best if your goal is touristing/sightseeing. If so, it's better to be on Wanfujing street. However, this one is closest to the pearl market (hongquaio).
One word of advice, don't go in December; it was freezing!!!

Even though we visited in winter, Beijing was a great place to visit. The Great Wall was amazing and tiring! The Forbidden City was good but not as renovated as I thought it would be. Tianamen Square was something to see and the number of Chinese tourists flocking to Mao's Mausoleum (in the middle of the square) was incredible.
We did get ripped off by chinese students who wanted to practice their english with us. It was fine until at the end of the hot pot meal they politely advised us that they were, "only students" and "invited" us to pay for them. So what do we get out of the deal? We aren't rich either! None the less the $240 price tag for the lunch was outrageous and I guess was the foreigners price?? We only ate 2 plates of pork and vegetables..hmmmm.
Again I ask, why does it feel like you are always getting ripped off in China.

Stayed at City Hotel, Shanghai - Shanghai, China.

Had bad experience joining a local travel agent "Jing Wai Tian" at xizang zhong lu to Suzhou. Then, joined the hotel Hangzhou trip which was far better.
The Tang Xuan restaurant along Huaihai zhong lu makes very nice food and reasonable price. Another excellent junk food i found near the hotel is the grilled cuttle fish kebab.
There is one more i wish to tell is a nite hawker near the hotel which open at midnite, serving very good small dumplin and mee...

I used the hotel's bike extensively. However, the hotel's bicycle I rented, although being the best of the lot, was still very much in need of repair. Bad brakes were dangerous and the pedal fell off, so I had to have it fixed. If the hotel spent some money on the bikes they would have even more happy customers (just a drop of oil would go a long way...). Wonderfully located for hutong exploration and going around the "Forbidden City" at midnight. I found it useful to bring my own crash helmet and torch - cycling can be dangerous in Beijing!

Stayed at Shangri-la Hotel Shenzhen - Shenzhen, China.
|
The Chinese Cultural village theme park in Shenzen was a pleasant surprise - very well done with all major Chinese cultures represented through dramatic shows and exhibitions. Don't miss the nightly parade there.<
If you arrive in Shenzen with luggage and plan to walk the few hundred yards to the Shangrila, be prepared to deal with people who want to carry your luggage for tips. They were persistent to the point of being almost threatening in nature. If I did it again (which I probably wouldn't and would just take a cab the short distance) , I would accept the help rather than fight them off for the entire walk - would have been a lot less aggravating and only cost a few RMB.

Stayed at Bell Tower Hotel - Xian, China.

For the 3 days we saw Xian, the pollution and smoke was terrible, and it was even visible inside the hotel! The terracotta warriors were good, but not mind-blowing. If you want to take local transport to the warriors, it's a simple trip. The term for terracotta army sounds like "Bing-Mai-Yun".

Stayed at Universal Hotel, Guilin - Guilin, China.
|
Guilin is nice, but I think that there are doing too much work on trying to improve its looks. The centre is starting to look far to plasticky. No tours were taken as I had been there a couple of years earlier.

Stayed at Landmark Hotel Canton - Guangzhou, China.

The other thing that was particularly distasteful to me was the lack of a train reservation to Hong Kong. The hotel was not helpful at all in booking before or during the stay.
I finally came to Hong Kong by Air. The bus is a horrible experience at the border and I will never take that again if any other method is available.

Stayed at SciTech Hotel - Beijing, China.

We took three tours:
Hutong which we loved. Actually got to visit a chinese home. It was great.
Did not like the mandatory shopping such as the jade factory. We spent at least half of each tour shopping except Hutong.

Stayed at Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.

If you're visiting Beijing during national day next year, don't go to the Forbidden City, Tiannemen Sq or the Summer Palace - they are so full of Chinese tourists visiting from out of town its just too crowded. Instead head to the Wall were its a bit quieter and visit the other destinations either before or after.
