J Stonham 29 April 2002
Stayed at  Landmark Hotel Canton - Guangzhou, China.
Guangzhou is cleaning up its act. The streets are cleaner and better lit, the taxis efficient and use the meter. Still polluted though. Taxis easy and cheap to get around. Dinner on the river at white swan is nice. Note trade Fair is moving from its current site next year so China Hotel will lose its arrogant smug position to fleece visitors. getting there from Hong Kong is very easy by bus or train. Bus is very cheap and always available whereas the train can get very heavily booked. Bus took 2.5 hours door to door but took longer back as HK customs are more fussy.

Stayed at  Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.
The tour to the great wall (Ba da ling) and to the ming'toombs organized by the hotel is ok, apart from the ritual visits to jade and medecins shops. There is a good kao ya (beijing duck) restorant in front of the hotel.

Stayed at  Capital Hotel - Beijing, China.
Beijing is a very interesting place, I only did not have enough time to see everything I would have wanted to see, because I only took the chance for a weekend before business. The recommended tour to the Ming tombs and the great wall, which I did booked at the reception desk in the hotel was interesting. The only disappointing thing was, that we did not see the ghost alley leading to the Ming tombs what I had expected. Instead we were taken to a shop for jade and a place where one should buy herbal pharmacies, what we did not know before. I would have liked to know this before!

Stayed at  Dynasty Hotel China - Xian, China.
Great sites - terracotta warriors are incredible and Big Goose Pagoda with the ladies outside doing tai chi and sword exercises, and Great Mosque with its serenity very memorable. Its a big place - you'll need buses and taxis to get around [watch out for robber taxi drivers at the station and the sites - the ones on the street use meters and are fine].

Stayed at  New World Courtyard Beijing - Beijing, China.
This is our first trip to China and as a whole we loved it. There are a few things you should watch out for though! When arriving at the airport, individuals will come up to you offering to take you to your hotel. Beware there prices are way to high, you should go to the Taxi drivers outside and ask for a rate. It should cost you about 15.00 usd. We traveled on our own, not in a tour group. Must see things on our list were, Forbidden City,Tennem Square,Great Wall Of China,Silk Alley. We took in the Chinese Acrobats performances which we enjoyed alot. The shopping was great and the prices were very cheap so go to buy! We hired a driver for the day, which the hotel helped us with. His name was Guo Feng (David) who spoke fine english and took us wherever we wanted to go. He charged $100.00 usd for the entire day and lined up tickets for the acrobats etc. He even offered to take us to a disco that night, a great guy with a fun personallity. His e-mail address is www.divid.Guo@263.net or his cell phone number is 13501088080. Wear comfortable shoes and dress casual.

Cabs are the way to travel and they are cheap! You do need to keep track of your belongings in crowds and will have to put up with people coming up to you trying to sell you stuff! Over all it was a great trip and experience, don't hesitate to go!!!!!

Stayed at  Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.
Marvellous city - wonderful sights - for an unspoiled Great Wall go to Huanghua [but watch out for locals trying to charge small tolls on the way up and take water with you]You can get ther by local bus quite easily if you don't want to pay for an expensive tour. Lama Temple is incredible - don't miss it If you like Indian or Thai food the Golden Elephant Spicy Restaurant on Sanlitun Lu is fantastic.

M Low 17 April 2002
Stayed at  Century Plaza Hotel, Shenzhen - Shenzhen, China.
The shuttle bus offered by hotel to take you to the HK International airport by road is not a good option. The Shen Zhen exit and HK entry points were very, very crowded on the day I went through and was delayed by about one hour. This may be an exceptional day, maybe other times and days may be better. So be warned of terrible hassle and possible delay. Give sufficient time when catching a flight. Maybe better to take the train or ferry. HK entry point immigration building seem to be undergoing construction and things may improve once completed ?!

Stayed at  City Hotel, Shanghai - Shanghai, China.
Shanghai is a fun city - very alive and with great restaurants - but when we were there the air was unbelievably polluted - much more so than any of the other cities like Beijing and Xian we visited. Definitely not recommended for anyone with even minor breathing problems, allergies etc.

N Vanavisutra 12 April 2002
Stayed at  Bell Tower Hotel - Xian, China.
for us 3 days in xian is enough. cit travel on the second floor is a great travel agency BUT the tour guide recommend me to buy something double the price of what they sell at the duty free shop in the xian air port. so we should be very careful not to trust the tour guide so much! or the cit should at least have a meeting with their staff not to make too much money with their clients in term of commission with all the shops. people do remember all the bad that happen to them.

here is the story: the second stop of the day tour to the terracotta we stop by at the factory then there are 6 ceramic horses in one box i look at the box and think about where to display in my house in bangkok then suddenly the lady said 280 i keep quiet and thinking where is the best place for this 6 horses then immediately she said 180 ----i am a little bit shock ! and 5 minutes later i said how about 100 because if you can give 100 discount i should ask for even more---she said it is impossible.

then i walk away and almost go to the bus then the tour leader come to me and said the manager of the shop said the most reasonable price for that is 150 ----i do trust her---- and pay 150 without thinking anything else.

later at the xian international airport i find exactly the same 6 horses at the duty free shop for the price of 80. i am a little bit surprise that somewhere along the line someone did not treat me right ----my common sense said---that one is my tour leader from cit on the second floor of my bell tower hotel

that tour leader is the lady she speak very good english and i do appreciate that she read this article and do talk to the store manager to return me the different! i am so serious my email address is narong@coit.com

again, her next trick is right after the bus leave the factory she said the store mgr call her and would want all of us to get back to the factory after the trip for the PRESENT

what do you think is that a trick or a truth!
