We have picked this hotel for the extension of our China tour. We wanted to be closer the center and that was a good choice. One tip - never fly on AIR CHINA international flights. It is a nightmare on every level!

Beware of the Great Wall and Ming Tombs tours offered from some of the hotels. You may end up spending too much time at 'appointed' giftshops and not enough time at the Wall or the Tombs.

Well-placed for Lo Wu commercial city - a really good shopping trip for us - the tailors/fabric market are well worth it - that said you have to prepare yourself for being constantly harassed - you constant get asked "manicure, Missy?" "watch" etc and will be pulled by the elbow.

Really not geared towards tourists. Few locals speak any English but were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Excellent bargains on clothing and souvenirs. Sightseeing tour with private guide was good idea. Be prepared for stop at 'Porcelain Factory' tourist trap. They've got that part figured out.

Be careful when you walk out of the hotel!! Dont take pictures of the building across the street with soldier in front. This is a militairy building. We got arrested doing so!! But due to help from the hotel manager "Scott" we came out ok!! But, a nice tale to tell when we came home.!

After 17.39 better to stay in the hotel as taking to the streets, even thos adjacent to the Shangri La meant passing through a tunnel of beggars who clung with great expectations to all who passed notably any "Gweilos" of which species we seemed the only ones. Potential suspicious pickpockets were numerous and the sight of one mother and baby eating out of a rubbish bin has left an indelible memory of the terrible poverty in this city.

Though it is very near to shopping centres, there is a big construction site right next to it. A lot of workers were around area and also it is located in a small road behind the main street, which makes it look a bit dangerous.

SZ is a nice town. Being an American I was warned that the people would shy away from me. This was half-true. In general the people were friendly, but be careful what you wear. When I was wearing slacks and a decent shirt, I attracted beggars like a magnet.
