I absolutely don' t recommend to fly Air China domestic. The attention is the worst I ever received in my life, unkind and unrespectfull. Beijing is an absolutely mess since they seem to be rebuilding all the city due to the Olimpiades candidate, but the historical sites are wonderful.

Shenzhen is a large and modern city. The services are plentiful and effective. The only caution is the traffic. In China driving is a competitive sport and pedestrians are targets. Never assume a) cars stop for pedestrians b)cars stop for red lights.

Stayed at Gui Shan Hotel - Guilin, China.

Guilin is under heavy construction right now. They want to make it the "Garden City" of China. It should be nice when they finish - except that you still can't drink the water and there remains much polution. The Li river cruse is spectacular in terms of natural beauty and I would recommend it highly. If someone could convince the river boats to leave at 5 minute intervals instead of all at once it would even be nicer because it would then not be necessary to breath the exhaust fumes of the boat in front of you, or to have the magnificient views dominated by the tail end of the boat in front of you. I thought Yangshao was a great place. Much more plesant than Guilin. The best part was riding a bicycle around the spectacular countryside. The limestone karsts and the rice fields are wonderful. I found the people to be very friendly and very helpful.

The destination is fantastic a lots of places to visit. We are very impress with the way th Chinese Authority manage all the main destinations : clean, efficient and reasonable.
I would like to point out that I initially booked a tour to the Stone Forrest with a tour desk in the Lobby of the Holiday inn Kunming
which I tend to believe is owned by the same people whom own the Hotel,
to find out in the following morning that a chinese speaking guide was assigned to us (I would like to remark that I'm Italian and I look Italian too) I complained and after several minutes someone arrived to tell me that if I wanted an English speaking Guide
I had to pay for a private car plus an additional 260 yuan which I believe was dear on the top of the already paid 400 yuan.
However I got the money back I hired a limousine from the hotel and without guide myself and my wife we actually had a great time.
We would like to point out that when a tour is booked people should be questioned about the knowledge of the Chinese language especially when the entire transaction is conducted in English.

Stayed at Guilin Bravo Hotel - Guilin, China.

Guilin is undergoing major roadbuilding at the moment, some of it close to the hotel so the whole city is very dusty . Another 6 months and it should be better.

I didn't get to go around much this time as this was a business trip. My first trip was in the Fall 2000. Food in Beijing is very good. You could almost walk into any restaurant and get a nice meal. The cleanliness and interior of the restaurant don't show this - so there are times that you just ignore your surroundings. The bathroom system in certain public places are different with the US, so please make sure that you have tissue paper with you at all time just in case.
The easiest way to go around is by taxi which is plentiful. You could take a bus or subway too if you know your way around. If you plan to go to the Great Wall, the best is probably to contact the concierge at the hotel where you stay and usually they will be able to recommend some drivers to take you. You will need a full day for this trip. The Summer Palace is quite nice too. Other places to go is the Silk Road (common goods) and the Pearl Market (white or black pearl). Make sure you bargain too.

I was in Shanghai on business so did not have the opportunity to get out and about. I found the taxi drivers very nice and helpful, but dangerous drivers!

Stayed at Dynasty Hotel China - Xian, China.

Xi'an is an unremarkable city, other than for the wall around it and of course the Terra-cotta warriors. It is very dirty, very third-world, the taxis are cramped and filthy, but was it worth the trip? Absolutely! A once in a lifetime experience.
