Langkawi is a very friendly and pretty destination, with jungle tumbling down to the sea. As others have commented the introduction of litter bins would improve the overall attractiveness of the place. Great food, go there and grow fat!

Langkawi is not the most exciting of beaches - certainly loses out to Phuket & Bali. While the visit to Coral Island was nice, there were just too many people around. Food was also generally a disappointment.

The new cable car ride is absolutely thrilling (and cool due to the breeze!), a wonderful experience. The cost of the ride at RM 15 was very reasonable.
Also the island-hopping tour by boat is a must. Having 99 or 100 islands (depending on the tide) surrounding the main island of Langkawi, the limestone cliffs and a million plus years old rainforest offer stunning vistas and sights. The tour agency I used, Keng Chuan Travel & Tour offered a fast boat with 2 crew, gave great service and most of all a very resonable rate (at the time of the search that is, so one could check around more if they wish).

Langkawi is still a quiet island, with great beaches, very friendly people, hawker stalls on the side of the road and rice paddies. However, I fear that in the next 10 years or so, developers will have turned the place into an island laden with resorts and hotels. If this happens, the quiet charm of the place would have deteriorated into another Waikiki. Just hope this doesn't happen.

Having looked around Langkawi island, it is certainly worth paying the extra to stay at a resort like Tanjung Rhu. The Tanjung Rhu beach is particularly good and, unlike some other beaches I have visited in Asia, I saw hardly any pollution being washed ashore.
The hotel offers tours via their own limousines, with either self or chauffeur drive.
There are plenty places to visit although only a few are particularly startling, e.g. the view from the cable car.

Best to visit Langkawi by car. You get to rent a car for 60 ringgit a day(automatic). Nothing much to see around. Tanjong Rhu is the best beach. Cable car is worth taking. Gunung Raya was nothing great. There are better hills, especially for those coming from India, this place is nothing in comparison to the hill stations of India.
There is an indian restaurant called Popadums. Please do not go there. Very high price and they serve stale food. I complained to the staff but they didn't bother. Please do not go to this restaurant.
Black sand beach was a disappointment. Nothing there really. Basically Langkawi is a place to relax, not much sight seeing here.

Cable car ride was an ultimate experience. I find it better than Genting. One must not miss this.

Langkawi is a fantastic island. The scenery is stunning. It's well worth going on the cable car just for the views - although if you don't like heights, you've been warned! The Barn Thai is a fantastic restaurant set in the mangrove swamps - they also offer a collection service from/back to your hotel. The Lighthouse is another good restaurant to watch the sun go down over the sea from. The island is quite small and we hired a car and explored for a day when it was raining. There isn't much in the way of shopping, although we did find some lovely craft shops. Taxis are quite cheap (although a lot more expensive than KL) and handy.

We stayed at the hotel pool for most of our visit as it was too nice to leave.
We did go on a sunset cruise which was fabulous and we did go shopping in the main shopping area but we weren't really impressed with the shops.
