Stayed at  Baan Yin Dee Boutique Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
Patong Beach is very very touristy. Can heartily recommend an Italian restaurant called Caruso, it's on the seafront towards the end nearest to Baan Yin Dee.

Phuket is a great place to base your self if you are interested in staying in a place with lots to do, as well as being close to many beautiful beaches. In addition many tours go from Phuket. I took 2 tours, one was a canoe trip and the other was an island tour. Both tours were great and I loved the places I got to visit.

FYI: The Jim Thompson fabric store on Phuket is a factory outlet (no advertised that way!) and the savings were huge. Also the show at FantaSea in Phukhet is well produced and very professional. However, the show is at 9 pm. No need to get there for dinner to at least 7:00. We were taken there at 6:00, too early.

Stayed at  Bangtao Beach Chalet - Phuket, Thailand.
If your idea of heaven is peace and quiet then this is the place for you. We stayed at the chalets for 10 nights and found the location absolutely idyllic. The chalets and grounds are maintained to an immaculate standard and staff are very friendly and helpful. The beach is a few minutes stroll away and is beautiful.

There are lots of restaurants along the beach front, most of them very small and quiet and serve good, value for money food (try Boom's for no-frills excellent food). We went on several trips during our stay which we booked through an agent in patong (much cheaper then booking them via the hotel) and there were no problems being picked up and dropped off by the tour operators.

I would definitely recommend the phi phi island snorkelling trip and the james bond island kayaking trip. Book trips through an agent - its half the price of booking through the hotel. The local taxi operators charge far too much and it is much better value to hire a jeep (the roads aren't bad at all for driving).

We did venture down to patong for a taste of the nightlife, and got some excellent bargains from the stalls, but couldnt wait to get back to the relaxing atmosphere of bangtao. Overall we were very satisfied with our stay and would definitely return.

Stayed at  Kamala Beach Hotel and Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
Phuket is more expensive to the rest of Thailand, but if you're going there it's worth staying a night or two at Phuket Town and enjoy the local cuisine and excellent shopping even if just window shopping. If you're going with your family try to choose hotel accommodation away from Patong which also gets a bit too crowded.

Stayed at  Orchidacea Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
Kata Beach is a fun spot without being as OTT as other areas on the island. The cul-de-sac of bars opposite the entrance to the Kata Beach Resort are a good spot. The beach is a little crowded (the Kata Beach Resort plus one other major hotel provide too many sunworshippers and these crowd out the beach) but hassle-free. When I was there, the police were having a blitz on traffic - licences, helmets, seatbelts - which is a regular occurrence, I am told. You have been warned !

Stayed at  Central Karon Village - Phuket, Thailand.
This was our first trip to Phuket. It's o.k., although a little over-rated. Far too "touristy" for my liking. Patong town is a tourist-trap. Although, the beaches are very nice. Good food, too. We've recently visited the Philippines and would recommend this over Phuket, without hesitation.

You must bargain if you were to shop at the Patong beach area. Opening prices can be quite ridiculous, you'll be surprised that prices can be slashed by more than 50%. You may be better off going to other shops in the Phuket town locality. Ask "Tuk-tuk" drivers to bring you to these places (bargain with "Tuk-tuk" drivers too!)

Canoeing at Phangnga Bay is a must for nature lovers. We went with "Phuket Adventures" & had a jolly good time. The guides were a fun bunch of people who also took our safety seriously.

Boathouse restaurant is very good. It is only a few minutes away from the hotel using a "Tuk-Tuk". If you are traveling with children, there is a mini-golf a couple of doors away from the hotel. The theme is prehistoric and has a lot of dinosours inside. There is plenty of shopping nearby and people are very friendly. There aren't too many choices for restaurants in the hotel, but plenty outside. Thai food is great. Just be careful not to ask for "hot" if your standard of "hot" is not the same at the Thais.

G Franco 13 September 2003
Stayed at  Bangtao Beach Cottage Resort - Phuket, Thailand.
Bangtao Beach is a normal place, we preferred Patong Beach, especially for young people but if you want only relax without noise, you could choose Banthao Beach.
