On this visit I thought I'd take a look at Johor Bahru, across the causeway in Malaysia. I caught a bus at the terminal on the corner of Queen and Arab Streets, for under $3 Singapore. The bus takes you across the island, and you get off to go go through Singapore immigration. Then back on the bus for a couple of hundred meters across the causeway, and you get off again for Malaysian immigration. This was Vesak day, a national holiday in Singapore, so there was quite a crowd, and it took about 45 minutes in line at immigration.
Johor Bahru town center is just a short walk from the bus terminal, so there is no need to use any of the taxis that will solicit you. I guess that the main appeal of the town for Singaporeans is inexpensive shopping, but I was more interested in walking around and getting a feel for the atmosphere of the place. I was surprised to see street signs written in Arabic. A 20 minute walk west along the coastal road brings you to the palace of the Sultan of Johor, open as a museum, which I thought was a worthwhile place to visit.

One interesting place to visit is the wet market in Chinatown complex basement. Morning time after 9:00 am is a good time to see fish, seafood, vegetable and similar items being sold is a typical Asian style market place. For food lovers, shops at basement of Takashimaya superstore at Orchard road can be a great destination. You can get all types of great tasting Asian and European stuff you want at very reasonable rates.

We have been to singapore many times and always enjoy dinner at one of the many restaurants at Boat Quay. On this visit we went to the Asia Bar at the Equinox Complex which has a spectacular view from the 70th Floor and happy hour prices till 9pm, so excellent value too.

The Singapore History Museum is closed for remodelling till 2006. It has set up an exhibition in temporary quarters but for a better feel of "old Singapore" check out the small museum at Raffles Hotel.

We visited the science centre in Jurong which is worth doing it. If you like live music the crazy elephone at boat quay is very nice. Pay a visit to Holland village. Have some satay from the old lady at the market place.

I found Singapore to be an extremely clean and modernised city. Travelling around on the MRT was extremely easy and made more enjoyable because it is state-of-the-art. The canal tour (from Clarke Quay) was also cheap and a great introduction to the city.
