Stayed at Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion - Penang, Malaysia.
|
Penang is a place not to miss. Please skip the beach, because there are much better ones in Malaysia and spend as much time as you can in the town. Great temples, old buildings and good food and if you are not staying in de Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion at least hop on a tour. Go to Penang as soon as possible, because it is changing fast. We have been there six years before and i is loosing charm rapidly. Altough it is still one of the most special places in Malaysia.

Stayed at Telang Usan Hotel - Sarawak, Malaysia.

We moved around with a rented car and were attending the Rain Forest Music Festival. The excursion to Kubah National park was a good idea since we have only 3 full days to explore Kuching.

Stayed at Tanjung Rhu Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.

Langkawi is an excellent 'all round' destination - it has some beautiful beaches and resort hotels and you could easily spend a week just sat on the beach - but if you are looking for a slightly more active holiday there is plenty to do and explore. We hired a car for a few days - would definitely recommend this as the roads are good and quiet and it allows you to see more of the island's beautiful scenery. We also did a day trip to the mangroves which again was excellent - we started off in Kuah town and were taken by speed boat around the island and then sailed down through the mangrove swamps. Along the way, we saw dolphins, sea eagles, monitor lizards and monkeys - lunch at the Barn Thai restaurant was included (this is worth visiting for its location alone - it is situated in the middle of the mangrove swamp and accessed via a wooden walkway!).

Stayed at Grand Plaza Parkroyal, Penang - Penang, Malaysia.
|
Penang is a pleasant surprise. The island is larger than we expected and you can spend a lot of money on taxis just to get around particularly if you are staying at any of the hotels on Batu Ferringhi Beach. For shopping, we tried Gurney Plaza (newly renovated and upmarket), Komptar (much more fun, lots of cheap shoes, DVDs, clothing) and the night markets at Ferringhi beach. There is not much of real value however you can really bargain for trinkets. If you are after DVDs, they can be picked up for around 4 ringgits each (about $1.30 AUD) however I can't vouch for the quality yet. Penang Hill is worth a visit however you might need to pick your day - understand weekends are very popular and therefore very crowded. Also check the conditions - smoke haze from Sumatran forest fires totally obscured our view from the top. Butterfly Farm is also very worthy of a visit.

Stayed at Hilton Kuching - Kuching, Malaysia.
|
If you visit Kuching, you must visit Bako National Park. The boat ride there must be one of the most beautiful in the world. The thoughtful boat man slowed down every time he saw me reach for my camera so that I could take a better photograph.

Stayed at Pulai Desaru Beach, The - Desaru, Malaysia.
|
We visited the ostrich farm. The keeper was a wonderful man who told us many things abt the ostrich. We drove along desaru and went to the Chinese restaurant - Good Luck. The food was good and cheap, except for the long wait. They serve table by table, until the diners before you get your food, you need to wait. Most of the time was spent in the hotel pool where the children had a great time.

Stayed at Radius International Hotel, Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

If you are going to KL to shop, the Radius is a great place to stay. Walk up the street (maybe a 5 minute walk) and you're in shopper's paradise with BB Plaza, Sungei Wang Plaza, Lot 10 and Plaza Low Yat.

Stayed at Dorsett Regency Hotel - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
|
KL is a happening place. Food, entertainment, culture, sight-seeing...all within travel distance. Suggest half day city tour to take in sights such as KL Tower with bird's eye view of the whole city, Twin Towers, Pewter & Batik factories, and a Chinese Temple (a lion dance practice session when we were there!). Lake Garden is nice scenic spot for the afternoon stroll and visit to the deer park and bird park, bring a picnic. A good place to visit just outside the city is Templer's park with its great waterfalls. If you are into local chinese food, go to the noodle house at BB plaza, great stuff! The Ship restaurant nearby serves tasty steak. Enjoy Malaysia, it's Asia all in one!
