Stayed at Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
|
Borneo is fabulous and I urge everyone to travel through as much of the country as possible as the people alone make the trip a worthy one. The Mt Kinabalu climb is beautiful, but tough, do not underestimate its ability to reduce your muscles and mind to jelly. The surrounding area of the national park is beautiful and a stay at the Mesilau Nature Resort, which presents climbers with a different start to the mountain trek, is highly recommended. Poring is a welcome rest point after the mountain with its calming pools and hot springs. The canopy walk here is interesting and the staff are helpful. For a great meal here venture outside the Poring Resort gates and head down the road to the Tropicanna Restaurant for some of the best meals in Borneo.
Sandikan is a city that gets under your skin and eventually brings a smile to your face. Agnes Keith's House is a must, along with the Chinese Buddist Temple on the hill. The English Tea House is better with a group of people and the clean Mayfair Hotel in the city centre is fantastic (depending on budgets, this is lower end) for its friendly owner and his extensive range of Kung Fu DVD's! I could go on but you get the idea - I will be going back first chance I get. The people in this country are some of the friendliest I've ever met.

Stayed at Renaissance, Kuala Lumpur Hotel - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

KL is good for a short visit but you would not want to stay there long. Kept looking for good quality bargains and hawker food venders...did not like what I found. Best I could find was China Town. But it was really dirty...and I hope you don't need to use a bathroom...because the public ones are awful. I live in China (Shanghai) and KL was much dirtier and had less bargains than Shanghai. Locals less friendly than I thought they would be. I was pushing a baby carriage and some just ignored us rather than step to the side so we could pass. Side walks are not built for strollers there...not like Singapore.
Good mall type shopping at KLCC. Good food at the various food courts at KLCC. Best part of stay was the Renaissance hotel. We stayed on the Club Floor...this was a good value. Great pool. Great international standard food. And of course KL has great weather too. Stop in KL on your way to somewhere else Langkawi/Sabah/Sarawak in Malaysia.

Stayed at Crown Regency Serviced Apartments - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
|
You may visit the Twin Tower in the day but must be early as they have time limit. The sky tower is ok but I still say Twin Tower is better. Take a cab down to Petaling Street for the best deal of replica shoes, watches, clothes and other stuff. GREAT BARGAIN.

Stayed at Holiday Inn Kuching - Sarawak, Malaysia.
|
A long bazaar opposite the waterfront were the only place we spent most, as our main purpose were to shop for Sarawakian crafts...they have so many choices of items here. TopSpot was a great place to dine on a range of seafood at reasonable price.

Stayed at Mandarin Oriental, Kuala Lumpur - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Taxis here are cheap. However it's best to get a metered taxi as some drivers will charge too much. If there's no meter ask for a quote on the price. Example: One driver asked for 15 ringgets the day after we paid another driver 5 ringgets for the same trip. We said 'No thanks' and settled for a 10 ringget fare from the next taxi in line. Note that some taxi drivers speak (and understand) very little English so it's good to have your destination written on a piece of paper or business card.
We took a tour down to Putrajaya, the new ultra-modern administrative capital being built 45 minutes south of K-L.
It's not completed yet but what a beautiful town it already is with some of the most stunning architecture you'll see anywhere and landscaped gardens blooming with colourful exotic flowers set among gorgeous tropical palms. There's a man-made lake surrounded by magnificent buildings and spanned by eye-catching bridges. The Mosque on the shores of the lake and the Prime Minister's Offices adjacent to it are real showpieces. Go to www.abcmalaysia.com/tour_malaysia/putrajaya.htm for pictures and info. The photos we took at Putrajaya are some of the best we have from our 7 week round-the-world trip which took us to four continents.

Stayed at Compact Hotel - Johor Bahru, Malaysia.
|
Compact hotel is strategically located at the heart of Johor city with City square, the largest shopping centre within a 5 min walking distance. In the evening a food street can be located at the backlane serving local delicacy such as barbecue seafood and local fare. A very good option for supper after shopping from City Square. Transportation is convenient to other parts of the city. Holiday Plaza ($6RM by cab) is about 10 minutes drive from the hotel. Good for clothing apparels, personal grooming and a little shopping for CDs and movies. For a good meal with more variety of local fare, you can proceed to Taman sentosa for local fare at a very affordable pricing. Take note to ask for pricing before committing on the food.

Stayed at Bintang Warisan Hotel - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Kuala lumpur is a modern M'sia city. If you need to move around cheaply, you can do so by foot and a map. However, the roads are not pedestrian friendly. To move around, you can choose the light-rail system (3 different lines) or take a taxi. I moved around on foot and light-rail throughout my stay. Try to bargain for a good taxi fare if driver insist on not using a meter. In chinatown, central market, there's a nice cosy thai restaurant on the 2nd floor. Good food and good price. All around, you can find good hawker fare in Chinatown. Must visit, KLCC, LOT10, sungei wang, bb plaza for shopping.

Stayed at Holiday Inn Resort Damai Lagoon - Kuching, Malaysia.
|
Sarawak a very interesting place to visit, but enjoyed Sabah much more. The resort is a little out the way but local tours are available. The trip was worth it just for the Orangutans and the long house. Be advised to stay away from here in the monsoon season it really is horrid, but im sure pleasant in the dry season.
