Recommended to take the Cable Car ride in Langkawi. Beautiful Scenery for those avid pohotographers.

You need a car to go around the island. Rented car is easily available at a reasonable rental. Petrol costs slightly higher. Foods are not expensive. I am shocked and unhappy because a bottle of JackDaniel's (1 litre) which cost only RM48-00 was taxed RM80-00. I might be just unlucky to meet the moody custom officer at that time. Because of the taxation (unfair) I advised my friends not to buy liquor. I was taxed because I did not stay for more than 72 hours. The stay in Langkawi was good but the image of the custom was poor.

Malaysia is a very friendly, laidback place, and Langkawi is the best place to go in southeast Asia if you want to relax. To make your stay even better…
First of all, when you get to Langkawi airport, rent a car! I heard you need an international license to rent a car, but the guy next to me at the counter was showing a local license from the U.S., and it seemed to be OK. (Contact sr_langkawi@yahoo.com.my to verify.) Taxis are relatively expensive for southeast Asia, and rental cars are cheap. I got the small 850cc Cancil (pronounced Kan-cheel) for about US$13 a day, including insurance. (You can definitely spend more per day on taxis if you go around a lot.) The gas tank is almost empty when you rent the car, so go straight to a gas station and fill it up. Gas stations are clean, well-lit at night, most of them are open 24-hours, and they are almost all self-service. That’s where the big, pleasant surprise hits you - - gasoline is about US 40 cents a liter (so about $1.50 a gallon), which is a gift from heaven if you’ve come from Japan or Europe. One tank lasted me a full week, and I was driving every day.
Second, if you love the sea, and if you love scuba diving, take my word and skip the scuba diving in Langkawi. Actually the diving place is Payar Pular (Pular Island), about an hour’s boat ride from Langkawi. Snorkeling on the beach is fantastic. Baby sharks up to a meter long come up in knee-deep water to eat your leftovers after lunch, and you can literally reach out and touch them. There are also a couple stray barracuda (watch your fingers & toes!), about the same size as the sharks, along with zillions of brightly multi-colored fish. The lunch is good too. But the scuba diving usually sucks, mainly because of the poor visibility. I got my PADI basic underwater license there in 2000, and on one of my first dives, the visibility was only 1-2 meters. This past visit (Sep. 2004), I went one day, two dives, and the visibility was 2-8 meters. All of the scuba divers had more fun on the beach at lunch time than in the sea scuba diving (the best diving I’ve done is in Bali, Indonesia and Boracay Island, Philippines.)

Langkawi is a beautiful island, giving great views when arriving or departing by air. The sea is a beautiful blue with these richly forested little islands lying here and there. Having lunch at the Yacht Club is a must-do. Good pricing, great food, lovely view.

For those who have time it better to rent a own driven transport and get the map of the island and experience the interesting places at your own sweet time.

I was working in a local school (MRSM Langkawi) and the hotel is very convenient for this. I also visited the shopping facilities and hawker stalls in Kuah.

Beautiful & ideal for honeymooners, though it's a GHOST town after dark with zero nightlife.
A magnificient getaway nestled in the lap of mother nature.

Renting a car is easily available as we did rented our locally made car "Iswara" ad drove around Langkawi.
Places visited were the Water Falls, the Hot Spring Village and I must say the Kedah State Govt should do something to maintain these places in order to attract more tourist as noticed these places are very dry.
Beaches visited are located at the Tanjung Rhu, Awana Porto Malai, The Andaman Datai.
Recommended beaches and hotel to stay is The Andaman Datai which have all the range of facilities like swimming pool, clean beach, saunna, jacuzzi, restaurants and ballrooms for meetings and etc.

Langkawi is advertised as a 'shopping paradise', but we did not find it so at all. Maybe if we tried to get more information first. The people on the island are very kind and helpful. Recommended to get taxi prices clear before you go anywhere.
The other resort we stayed at was very nice (but pricey). Overall, we would like to return. We found it to be much more peaceful than (places in) Phuket, as it is not nearly as developed yet. It is not what I would call a 'bargain' destination, though.

If not for the rental car that take us around,
travelling around Langkawi is quite incovenience at times.
With the rental car (quite expensive - Nissan Sentra cost Rm$110 daily as compare to JB), we
travel around the islands visiting most of the luxurious hotel (like Andarman, Tanjung Rhu resort, Berjaya resort etc..) We also visit the Underwater world and Crocodile farm but nothing special, nice to visit some of the nice beaches along Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok, Pantai Tanhjung Rhu and Pantai Datai..when driving around deserted area like the Andaman Datai Bay , beware of narrow bend and one way road..quite scary when you are approaching the hotel whereby you have to drive up a deep curving slope...but the Andaman hotel offers very exotic tropical rainforest getaway..along mid way you can have a very nice view of the Pulau Dayang Bunting lake. We also visit the Eagle square and Lagenda Park at Jetty area, the Budaya Graft and Cultural Complex, Langkawi Crystal, Yacht Club and Air Hangat Village etc.. a pity that we miss the Pulau Payar Marine park due to kids
with us may not be suitable...overrall quite enjoyable trip but whenever anything on Langkawi (e.g duty free shopping mall etc), they are talking sbout small scale type...you will not expect big shopping mall..and if you are drinker and smoker, beers are cheaper than mineral water and exercising of your lungs are very affordable.
