Short stay of two nights so touring time limited. Good selection of brochures at hotel, decided on city tour which can be arranged through local tourist firms or by local taxi but opted for hotel's tour in a red London Cab with personal guide and modelled to our taste. More expensive than other trips but worth it.

Recommendations: the seafood night market in KK is wonderful, with fresh live seafood (and frogs) which you choose and they will cook to your requirements. Great fruit juices as well. Warning: be careful with your handbag or backpack around the market area. I was robbed of my purse but, once I made a fuss, grabbed the suspect and yelled for the police, some locals (silently) pointed me in the direction of where his accomplice had hidden it behind a door. I was VERY lucky and made sure I wore a moneybelt after that!! I was also warned of pickpockets in Sandakan, particularly around the waterfront markets. Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre is definitely worth a visit and be sure to check out the information centre and view the videos.

In front of the hotel, there is a Chinese Restaurant which serves BAKUTEKUCHA. It is very good taste and the price is reasonable as well. Sunday morning market on the street interesting to meet local people in KK SABAH.

Unfortunately, The Jesselton is really the highlight of Kota Kinabalu. The city is not much to look at and is rather unpleasant relative to other cities in Malaysia.

There is a street market on Sunday morning right outside the front door. The French restaurant in the Hotel is unique in style and excellent value. Walking around town is simple and has easy access to many island ferries.

Kota Kinabalu is a pretty laid-back place, good for relaxing. The Nat'l Park islands are nicely kept and only a 20-miunte boat ride from the shore. I found plenty of fast-food restaurants close by, and my wife was very happy with the locally-owned, smaller eateries.

We travelled to Kota Kinabalu from Kuala Lumpur as part of a "Special" holiday lasting 2 weeks in Sabah. We toured Kota Kinabalu then went to Kinabalu National Park where we stayed 2 nights climbing Mt Kinabalu on our 30th wedding anniversary in the company of our guide James - who went out of his way to show us the many varied species of plants in the park. only down side was that the park does not accept credit cards and there are no EFTPOS cashing facilities in the park - this could catch some people out. We then returned to Kota Kinabalu and on to Sandakan where we visited Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary - a wonderful experience. We prefer to travel on local buses because we like to meet the local people whom we found to be extremely friendly - this means that if you wish to spend more time at a facility, you do not have to leave when the tour bus leaves. We managed to watch a young Orangutan in some bamboo for over an hour - an unforgetable experience. We met a young dancer on the way to Sepilok who was part of the Tiger Beer song & dance production and we were invited to attend the concert in the Sandakan hall - We didn't understand a word but the spectacle was most professional and much enjoyed. Turtle Island - like our trip to Malaysia - was idyllic and good value. We then visited a friend in Lahat Datu where we toured a Palm Oil plantation, prawn farm, Danum Conservation centre - the hospitality of our hosts were on a par if not better than the "Highland Hospitality" of my homeland - Scotland. A wothwhile visit is the Museum in Kota Kinabalu and the village adjoining where you can view the different types of native dwellings and arts & crafts. When we visited, we were there in the heat of the day and we spent a most enjoyable few hours with Jamain(sp?) who made us paper flowers, a flute and told us of his life as a child during the war - a better history lesson than any text book!

KK is a wonderful place to visit as a transit point for many wonderful places in Malaysian Borneo or as a destination in itself. I explored the surrounding islands, rode with locals through the rainforest on the only train in Borneo, climbed Mt. Kinabalu, and soaked in Poring Springs. I only began to scratch the surface of Borneo. I can't wait to go back to visit more indigenous people and see more exotic flora and fawna.
