The whole city is in walking distance to the hotel, good and cheap Malay food stalls just opposite to the entrance. Oriental seafood, a hawker stall with excellent dishes just 7 minutes walking away (opposite to the Thai aiways office).

Taxis are a cheap enough way to get around. All drivers very friendly and helpfull. Excellent trip round the places of interest - 4 hr trip for around £18.00. Every place we ate at was really good value for money.

The water is not clear in this area, you cannot do any under water activity. If you are looking for good beaches you have to drive 2 more hours to the north (after leaving the island) or taking a boat from its port. If you wanna just relax the area is beautiful and the beaches are quiet and you will find many all around. There is big market with cheap merchandise and many restaurants in the area with good sea food but their price is quite high for the country because of many tourists visiting the island. Consider renting a car if you go there. At the end north-west of the island there is a good national park for hiking. Another option is to rent a boat for fishing and going to the Monkey island (30 minutes). Water activities are plenty available in the area.

Georgetown (Penang) was a fascinating place to visit - food was great from street vendors through to restaurants. Walked most places - pavements uneven and sometimes difficult to manage. A visit to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion a must - it is a hosted Homestay - but also open for tours.

The Buddhist temple in Georgetown is excellent. There is a great restaurant run by Indians along the way into Batu Ferringhi city centre. I believe it's called The Last Drop. Also, look out for a small pub closer to the hotel with very nice wooden furniture. Good place to hang out.

I was in Penang for the first time and stayed for 4 days and enjoyed it very much. Most of the night life is near to the cititel hotel. There are lots of good restaurants at reasonable prices and loads of hawker stalls with good food. I found out from the driver from the airport that you can hire a taxi to take you around the island for 25 ringit an hour it take about 5 hours but worth every penny. The man I got lived in Penang all his life so I really felt I saw the island and was able to see parts I liked better than others for my next visit and also I did not have to stop anywhere I did not want to. In george town there is a free shuttle bus that goes in a circular direction so you can hop on and of, you do not need a tour of georgetown because it's small enough to get around, just get the places-to-see list from the tourist board office at fort cornwallis. Go and see the new Chinese temple it's quite something, also the botanical gardens are worth a visit but don't feed the monkeys.

The main reason for my trip was to visit the Thai Embassy, which is only about ten minutes by taxi for 10R or by local bus for less than 1R. A trip to the top of tower is certainly worth a look and for a great afternoon out, a trip up Penang Hill on their light railway.

Very close from the hotel, are a variety of restaurants, that, everybody will find what he likes. There are some attractions in Penang (Cable cart at the hill, Museum, Malls), but the best thing I enjoy is the sea sports, body and foot massage and total relaxation.

On our first night, our family arrived quite tired and it was raining and dark already. We asked the front desk for suggestions, and we decided to explore the street behind the hotel. As we passed by a cute little tea house, the hostess came out and invited our family of 4 in. The other table of 6 were just finishing up and after we ordered our food, we were the only patrons. As we waited for our food, there were people who would enter, walk through the restaurant, and through the back door. Then people would enter the back door, through the restaurant, and out the front door. As we noticed the number of people entering and leaving, it slowly dawned on us that we had inadvertantly stepped into a establishment that was more than was advertised! My husband and I came to the same conclusion--the restaurant was a front for a brothel! Good thing that our girls, 2 and 3, were too young to understand anything. We quickly finished our dinner (it was quite good, by the way) and left, vowing not to return!
It is a good idea to find a place closer to Komtar if you want to use public transportation. We hired a taxi for the day to go around the island, and for two people and 2 children, it was cheaper than if we were to join a group tour (they would usually charge for 1 child for our family). Taxis are expensive. We went to Kek Lok Si and discovered that taxis are not that easy to locate in that area, especially at the end of the day! So it would be a good idea to ask your taxi to wait for the round trip or to hire a taxi by the hour and have them take you there.

If you love spicy curry fish head, restaurant 86 at gurney drive is worth a try, but try not to drive. Finding a parking space can make you very hungry.
