I hired a taxi cab to take me on a 4 hour tour of Penang. It was fantastic, we visited the Butterfly Farm, Botanical Gardens, Snake Temple and a few other temples. A great way to see the sights.. Also a day at Batu Ferringhi is a must!

The resort was interesting although it tends to be a bit smelly at night due to the open drains everywhere. Because at the night market the streets get very busy at night and are particularly hard to navigate with a small child in tow. The restaurants we found pretty much inditinguishable. However we had a good experience getting shirts made up at the Happy Tailor, very good value at 100RM (less than £20) and good quality. I would also recommend trips around Georgetown, it's a fascinating city.

Pulau Pinang (Penang) is a wonderful island in particular the vibrant large Asian city of George Town. It is full of historical and interesting sites. In particular not to be missed are the Buddist Kek Lok Si Temple, Khoo Kongsi temple and clan house and China town in general. There are other worthwhile sites further afield than George Town such as the Penang War museum near Batu Maung that is a must visit venue. Travel around the island can easily be achieved by Taxi, arrange the price first and consider hiring the driver for the day at a fixed price. Driving around the island is horrific particularly in George Town, we would advise against it unless absolutely necessary. We found Batu Feringgi very dissapointing and it had nothing to offer us, we did not stay for the night market and so can not comment on it, but there is plenty of shopping in George Town well into the evening.

Getting around to and from George town city by Hotel shuttle bus or taxi. Gurney beach is a good place to visit at evening time, with many restaurants and food varieties.

A couple of excellent restaurants:
Peppino at Shangri-La’s Golden Sands Resort - only about 10 minutes walk from the Grand Plaza Parkroyal. This isn't cheap in terms of local prices (about RM 75 per head just for a main course, wine and drinks), but the food and service were excellent.
I can't remember the name of the second one, but it's on the right hand side of Hot Wok, on the 4th floor of Gurney Plaza. The deep-fried beancurd with spicy peanut sauce was delicious! Also enjoyed the fresh coconut juice too.
If in Penang, I'd definitely recommend visiting the Kek Lok Si temple - it's not far from Georgetown. Also, be sure to get a trishaw ride around town to experience Chinatown and Little India. The Khoo Kongsi clanhouse is worth seeing too.

Penang is famous as being one of the world's best eating places. The Sunway is within walking distance of many outlets. Historic Georgetown was one of the earliest British settlements in peninsular Malaysia and there are numerous well preserved colonial buildings still in use. Penang is a Chinese majority state, and there is a fine museum relating to the history of local Chinese. Taxis are cheap and plentiful. The drivers are friendly and knowledgeable, but it helps if you find one that speaks your language. You can also ride around Georgetown in ancient rickshaws..but agree the price first. We took the cable car to the top of Penang hill and visited a temple with a huge Bhudda where we bought very reasonably priced souvenirs. You can contribute to some building costs in a unique way. Buy a roof tile with your name written on it in Chinese, together with a blessing, and it will beome a part of history!

Being a Malaysian family, we drove to Penang from Kuala Lumpur. Transport within the island was therefore not an issue. We loved the local food there, especially the "Assam Laksa". Highly recommend that of the Burmese lady who sells hers in a coffee shop across the road from the Pulau Tikus police station in Burma Road (not too far from the Siamese Wat & Burmese temple).
Don't bother to swim in the sea around Penang. It's too polluted, not to mention the Jelly fish. The east coast is better for that.
We went to look at the restored Cheong Fatt Sze mansion in Leith St in Georgetown. It was built without nails, but that was not its main claim to fame. Tours are at 11am and 3pm daily at RM10 per person. Was suitably impressed.

Easy to walk around the Batu Ferringhi area or a taxi ride from one end to the other is very cheap. Great night markets offering lots of things to buy.
Our favourite restuarnat was 'Mario's' which is not far from the Golden sands Shangrila hotel. Good coffee, great breakfasts and evening meal. Everyone at the resort were very friendly.
