Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia is a melting pot of cultures. Walked around and sniffed the atmosphere. Lovely people...a hassle free place (except for the cyclo drivers). Good nyonya food everywhere, favorite restaurant though: Kashmir (near Lebuh Chulia ) (Indian).

Plenty of fantastic hawker stalls selling delicious food very cheap! Avoid the back streets at night if you don't like rats!

Nightmarket start outside the hotel and is a nice place to walk in the evening.
Plenty of nice restaurants outside hotel. The water by the beach is dark and it's impossible to see the jelly fish - take care.

Georgetown has not suffered (or benefitted) from the gentrification that has occured in the larger resorts and cities of Malaysia - it is a real town serving the local people, with only peripheral changes to accommodate the traveller. Chinatown is particularlly authentic.

We visited the mall close to the hotel and since we were only able to have a one day visit we mostly walked around town and took the free bus that goes around the city.

Within city centre, but unless you don't mind waken up by the mosque beneath every 6am (even if you stayed on the top floor with windows closed), otherwise it's convenience for meals (Lebuh Kimberley, 5 minutes walk) and a 10 minutes walk from Komtar. Taxi stand just next block, quite convenience. For dinner, May Garden diagonally opposite is a good recommendation!

Stayed at Ferringhi Beach Hotel, Penang - Penang, Malaysia.

This hotel provide a free small bus to go three time a day to Georgetown. It also has a lot of tour on offer namely the excursion to Monkey beach were they will teach you to catch small fishes. A very good lunch is provided. There is other tours but I didn't bother.
If you want to go to Penang Hill (an absolute must!!!) get the earliest courtesy bus from the hotel and at Georgetown take a local bus or a taxi to the Penang hill station. It is so lovely and cool there that you will easely spend the day there.
For the temples took a taxi as they are all close to each other. The beaches in Penang are quite polluted and you run a risk to be sting by jelly fish.
For food, don't really bother with expensive restaurants unless you have a lot of money to spend and love shark fins!!! You eat very well and very cheaply in the stalls. The ones in Batu Ferringhi are also covered so you can still eat there when it is raining. They are very clean, very cheap and the food is varied and tasty.
Another sight is the night market also in Batu Ferringhi where you can get a lot of nice bags, silver jewlery and art crafts.
