This was a business trip so outings were limited. The island is small and the use of a taxi for all journeys was not a problem. Neither was the cost.

Batu Ferringi has all the hallmarks of a tourist-trap, but the beach is pleasant enough, and Georgetown (more interesting, if rather less scenic) is only 20 minutes away by bus or car.

We did not do much sight seeing while we were in Penang. The Lounge area is comfortable and the band is exceptional. We will be looking forward to visiting the area with our children and staying in your hotel again.

There's a shuttle bus from the hotel to Gurney Plaza and Island Plaza which are about 3 to 4 kms down the road. We did not try the hawker stalls at Gurney which was recommended because of the heat and suspect hygiene (we were strict with ourselves this time considering the SARS scare). The restaurants we went to around Gurney area were a disappointment. Maybe we just went to the wrong ones or maybe food in Penang was just over-hyped.
Also, taxi fares are expensive - they don't run on meters and you have to bargain with them everytime which makes it very unplesant. The fares are more expensive that Kuala Lumpur!! One word of advice when booking into a hotel in Penang (especially those along the beach) is that make sure the hotel provides shuttle services if you want to get into town. The taxi fares saved would be enough to upgrade you to a better hotel. So, don't suffer the same fate as we did - penny wise pound foolish.

If you want to venture out the hotel's minibus and taxi service provides a convenient means of getting to the night market or Georgetown, and getting back.

We got around by booking a taxi for the duration of our trip, whom the driver acts as our tour guide when we are not sure where to go next. Went fine, although felt a little restricted sometimes.

Batu Feringhi not very nice. The night market is ok but would stay next time in Georgetown which is much more interesting. Nothing much to see in Batu Feringhi, sea is not clean and sand rough so better to swim in hotel pool. We saw almost nobody swimming in the sea.
Penang is nice. Lots of old colonial buildings, relaxed feel, woth going up Penang Hill. Good food and Gurney Drive food market worth a trip.
Would visit again though 2-3 days there is long enough to see everything.
