Must visit The Shadow of the Moon bar which is next to Residence Inn. You can ask Steven to specially prepare dinner for your group - he will buy the freshest ingredients on the day and cook a great meal. Order the steamed fish and wild boar curry. Amie's Cafe is great for breakfast.

The setting is beautiful as the island is largely undeveloped, a welcome change from Phuket, Langkawi, etc. The beach is rather rocky but at hightide the swimming is great. Plus, there is a gorgeous little island with beautiful white sand (Coral Island) which you can get to by boat in about 20 minutes.

Travel by car is the best way to go around. The places I have visited would be as follows: (a) Teluk Cempedak (great beach), (b) Kerteh gas processing plant (burning flames are beautiful at night), (c) other resorts. The above destination are within half an hour to 45 minutes by cars. The best restaurant would be the chinese restaurant called Tong Juan in Kemamang town, where the seafood are great and just 10 to 15 minutes drive from Cherating.

It's a good location to stay, just 40 minutes to an hour drive to Kuantan Town and other tourists attraction such as Teluk Cempedak, Pancing Cave, Kerteh, Sungai Lembing, etc. The best restaurant should be Tong Guan Chinese Restaurant where the stuff crab is the best.

Cherating is a nice place. Wonderful beach, near turtle sanctuary. Laid back Cherating village is worth a visit, for food and batik shopping. Duyong restaurant overlooking the sea serve excellent Thai & Chinese seafood.

Hotel very conveniently located near the Kuantan city centre and nearby beaches such as Berselah and Batu Hitam. Was able to enjoy a mix of shopping, jungle trekking (in Pandan Waterfall), 4x4 driving (in our SUV) in Sg. Lembing, and of course strolling on the beaches. Food generally inexpensive. Restaurants to recommend include Pak Su Seafood (famous for its stuffed crab), ikan bakar (grilled seafood) at Tg. Lumpur, Satay Zul just 5 km from Hyatt and even the food court (very cheap) also abt 5 km from Hyatt just behind Satay Zul.

Tioman is the right place for jungle trekking as well as snorkeling. It offers some nice diving spots. Coming from KL, I recommend to fly to Tioman. The flight takes about 40 minutes and costs are only slightly higher as for transportation to Mersing plus ferry/speed boat (takes 6 hrs min.).

When staying in Singapore, Tioman island is a great place to visit for a few days. Normally this resort offers a special 3 days/2 nights package which is enough time to recover from the hectic life in Singapore. Berjaya Air (40min) can be recommended as travel option, though ferries are going as well. It takes 4 hours though, and price is almost the same.

We stayed at Cherating for only one night as part of a family trip around Malaysia in January 2004. We drove from KL to Cherating as the first leg (having travelled by "luxury coach" from Singapore the day before). The road from KL starts well, and the trip through the Hills around Genting is spectacular. However the quality of the road diminishes after the trun off the Genting Highlands resort but the commercial traffic is still heavy, so the journey took longer than expected. One can only plan for travelling around 60kms in an hour on these roads: not the 80 we had estimated ! The resort is further out from Kuantan than we would have wanted, but makes up for it by being located on a deserted stretch of beach.
We went in January (the only time we could go) although this was in the period of the NE Monsoon. This meant that the off-shore island resorts were closed, and there was a definite "off season" feel to the place. However, this also lends charm and it was wonderful to be away from the package holiday crowds of Penang, Phuket or Bali ! The whole East Coast experience was great: we went to Kuala Terrenganu and Kota Bharu later in the week and enjoyed them thoroughly also.

Tioman is a Very nice beach, waters are very clean and the resort excellent for families. Worth visiting once at least. Getting there can be a bit of a drag, the drive from Singapore took 5 hours because of heavy Friday public holiday traffic and the ferries never leave on time, so budget at least 6 hours.
