Mulu National Park is a place for those who enjoy nature. One must visit Lang, Deer, Wind and Clearwater caves while in the park.

Since I live and work in Brunei, I used my own car to drive to Miri (about 3 hours), and on to Niah Caves National Park (another 2 hours). The hotel has several ethnic restaurants (Chinese, Japanese), which serve fair, albeit terribly overpriced dinners. Next time I will stay at the hotel, but find outside restaurants (lots available).

Main caves were very interesting - especially watching the bat departure. Did a trip down the 'rapids' but water level in August is a bit too low to make it a thrilling ride! Buy some water at the airport and put in fridge in your room - much cheaper than the hotel.

We only live across the border and as we only stay at weekends, travelling to the hotel is no problem. For shopping and restaurants, it is very good. It is easier to leave your car at the hotel and take a taxi as parking seems very limited. We have not as yet taken any tours.

There are a lot of caves in Mulu. The adventurous could opt for adventure caving, or simply visit the show caves. There are four show caves each showing a different aspect of the nature of caves. Lang Cave has some of the most beautiful cave formations I have seen.
Rock climbing is available even for first timers and body surfing on the river with its gentle rapids makes for a relaxing afternoon.
The R&B center at the hotel offers excellent packages, though rather pricey. A quick 5min bus ride (a service offered by the hotel at a nominal fee of RM2) to the National Park brings more choices of nature tours, cave tours, trekking, camping.
The Pinnacles is a must. The limestone formations in Mulu is one of only two such formations in the world. The trek however is very tough and fitness is an absolute criteria.

Everything in Miri is about half the cost in the west thanks to the current poor value of the Malaysian Ringit. The only thing that was as expensive or more than western prices was beer and other alcohol, though this should be expected for a prodominatly muslim country.
