breakfast buffet was ok. Forced to have dinner in hotel's western style/local restaurant due to time constraint. very disappointing. ate great dinners in Miri town using lonely planet. also visited Niah Caves NP on our own and stayed overnight. used local transport and had a great experience. tours offered were expensive but helpful. tour operators were very nice and accomodating but did not need to use them.

The tour of the caves and river were excellent, again thanks to Ricky and John. The food and atmosphere in the restaurant by the park was great (also run by another John). We even had a performance of the warrior dance by John (restaurant owner).

We enjoy Miri because it offers shopping and restaurants. The hotel bars vary in the number of guests they attract! We enjoyed a meal at the chinese restaurant opposite the hotel - good value and delicious food. The crocodile farm was interesting if not a little sad!

A hundred meters to the public bus stop for easy connections to Miri bus station and share taxi stand for day outings to Niah Caves and the long houses in the area. Very helpful Travel Bureau near the bus station in Miri.

A "must go" in Miri for those in need of good Western food is the Cafe Miri where you can sample some excellent Kangaroo and Ostrich steaks (amongst others). Run by an Australian, the service is second to none in Miri. However, the cafe does close for a considerable number of weeks, normally over the Chinese New Year period. Many of the local eateries are also worth a try. Look out for the most busy ones and just let yourself be surprised. For sites to visit in the region, go to the Niah Caves. Approximately an hour and a half drive out of Miri, these caves are at least as impressive as the ones at Mulu (if not more so). As the plankways have been slippery all three times I was there, good foodware is essential, although I'm not sure what would be the best anti-slip shoes to wear. Don't forget to visit the museum on the way out (just before you get back onto the boat).

We travelled to Miri by private car (from Brunei), and visited Lambir Hills National Park (about 20 minutes from Miri). Lambir Hills is a wonderful place to experience "secondary rain forest", water falls (with swimming holes), and picnic sites. Great place for a day trip.

Miri is a busy and lively town. Shopping is quite good. Most places sell the same sort of thing! Plenty of good places to eat, such as the seafood restaurant the Apollo, this was excellent. Do not be put off by its appearance!
