Visited: Maritime Square (not interesting), Clock Tower (good chendol).
Parked the car and walked around the Chinatown area (very interesting to experience the culture). Hoe Kee Chicken Rice (so so), Ole Sayang (Chicken Ponteh, Ikan Cili & the Bean Sprout with Salted Fish - "Good").

Melaka much busier and more crowded than I had expected. Try Capitol Satay for an interesting & delicious place to eat. Big bucket of bubbling sauce in the center of your table. Large satay selection in nearby cooler, just grab what you want then immerse in sauce for a few minutes to cook. Very inexpensive and tasty but be sure to bring some napkins with you.

We flew into Singapore and spent a night with friends. Then hired a car from Avis at the airport and drove to Melaka.
When you hire a car in Singapore to drive across to Malaysia, you will need to buy a Cash Card to pay for the electronic road pricing system which is in operation during peak periods (8am to 10am and 5am to 7am I think), and also tolls when your cross the checkpoints.
We spent half an hour roaming round looking for places that sell a cash card (Mobile garages and 7-Eleven. Would suggest you buy one before getting the car, as the route to the Tuas checkpoint (which is the one to the west of Singapore, and not the Woodlands one which is to the north)does not offer many places/garages. The card is S$5, and one can top it up, S$10 is enough to get you in and out of Singapore.
We drove through Tuas, as it meant avoiding the jams at Johor Bharu once you get past Woodlands. From Tuas just follow the signs for Kuala Lumpur and get on the motorway. Have some small malaysian ringits handy as there are several tolls to pay before you get to Melaka. About MR40 will be enough for a one way trip.
Drive for about two and half hours north, and then come to the turn off for Ayer Keroh. Here it can come tricky as there are heaps of signs for Melaka this and Melaka that. (We drove in the night and got very lost following the signs!) Basically, once you come off the motorway for Ayer Keroh, do not stray off from the dual carriage way, as this will lead you to Melaka!
We thought Melaka was facinating, though slightly delapidated. Jonkers Walk around Chinatown (across the river) has many little curios shops and decent food places. The maritime musuem gives a brief history of Melaka starting with the Chinese then the Portuguese, Dutch and British. All this is set in a replica Portuguese trader.
The forts and church near by is also worth a visit.
Most places are within walking distance, would not suggest driving around. While the traffic is hardly testing, the one way system is a killer!
Melaka can be done in a day, and be a base for outlying areas which are far more interesting.

Nice city to walk around in. One day is all that's needed. Rickshaw ride was good, but watch out for them trying to rip you off. The proper rate is about $25 ringgit an hour. Our guy tried to blatantly rip us off at the end. I refused to pay more than the rate I knew was right (according to Lonely Planet) and so it ended on a bad note with a bit of an argument. Be clear with the driver what you will pay per hour.

The old part of Melaka is very interesting and quaint...we felt safe and comfortable. We walked easily to all the temples and sights of interest and we also got a trishaw ride for an hour and a half which cost about 40 ringgits. Our driver was a fascinating 76 year old fellow, who had been through both wars and the Japanese occupation. His name was Mr. Ong and he showed us all the postcards that his other passengers had sent him over the years. We did have to get out and push once or twice, just in case... he was quite a frail old man with an huge heart!
There are some great places to eat and drink...Harpers on the Melaka River (walking distance from the hotel) where you can get excellent food, either western or fusion. Be adventurous and try any of the little Chinese or Nonya stalls in the night markets, they're great.
Our favourite antique shop was the Melaka House in the same street as the Puri Hotel and we also visited the Heritage Museum also just a short walk left from the Hotel.
We found the "Destination Guide" on the asia-hotels.com website invaluable and recommend getting a print-out and having it with you.

If one goes to Malacca for the cuisine (which is a very good thing), make sure research is done in advance and be prepared to eat earlier than typical in order to get into the well-known eateries which tend to be crowded at lunch and dinner and many do not take reservations. It is not a place to be spontaneously searching around at 19:30 for a dinner spot using the a 'top-5' restaurant list as a guide.

Hotel is very far from tourist places by walking distance. But if you take taxi from the hotel, the taxi fare is too expensive, which is RM10, the distance by driving is only 10-15min.
Recommended restaurants : "Ho Kee" chicken restaurants at Jonker Street, "Mah Goo" Nonyang restaurants.

a nice little town, well worth a weekend away. Only hassle - all the Sunday coaches back to Singapore (and even JB) were booked solid by the time we arrived on the Saturday - we ended up having to take a cab back.

We have own transport and went to Zoo Melaka only as our stay at Melaka was a short one. But there are a lot other places that we would like to visit in future, such Crocodile Park, Lake Garden, Historical Building etc.
