For me the most outstanding thing about Melaka is not the cultural shows, the heritage walk or even the food. All of these were good. But the most memorable to me was the night market at China town.

Imagine a mile long narrow street jam packed with people and stalls selling all kinds of foodstuffs, clothes, homewares and interesting knick knacks that you cannot find elsewhere. Yeah you may say that you can find that at night markets everywhere. The Melaka night market is different. Along the street you will find many Chinese associations. And some event is always happening at these associations. We found three that were conducting karaoke sessions and one that was conducting a dance class - in full view of the street. And you are welcome to go in, to watch or even to join them.

And a bit morbid, but interesting nonetheless, there are about 2 or 3 funeral homes holding wakes for the dearly departed. The interesting and the morbid at the same place, the alive and the dead mingling. Never experienced that before until I went to the night market in Melaka.

Malacca has shifted its bus terminus out from the city centre. The new bus terminus, Malacca Sentral, is very much better than the old terminus. However it also means that this hotel is no more within walking distance from the old bus terminus. Taxi from the new bus terminus to the hotel is RM14 (probably a bit steep for a short 10 mins ride as compared to taxi ride in other Malaysian cities). Those adventurous can try taking the local bus (less than RM1/pax) from the bus terminus to the city centre.

Our first visit to Melaka, we loved walking the historical sites and the old streets. We visited the museum on the boat and the children loved riding on rick shaws. Jonker Street was a wonderful maze of antique shops. Great atmosphere. We found a great restaurant called Walkers just off Jonkers Street, and after dinner there we really enjoyed the night market. A great family weekend.

Roast pork at Jalan Bunga Raya is excellent and cheap. In the evening, the stall sells unforgettable fried oyster egg. Park at the hotel and stroll back.

There are not too many places to eat out or drink in Melaka. The Geographers Cafe in Jonker Street does nice food and offers good service. Melaka is any easy city to explore with everything in close proximity to the hotel. It is safe and interesting to wander round some of the narrow streets.

We visited the surrounding places of interests where most of the tourists will not miss. The night market at Jonker Street was something new for us. It was a consoling factor for us that Seri Costa was within walking distance to many places such as the Maritime Museum, the Art & Craft Centre for tourists, St Paul's Church, etc where we managed to take some pictures.

Restaurant Ole Sayang close to Equatorial hotel is recommended, good and cheap nyonyafood, seems to be popular with locals too.

Being a foodie, I find Melaka an interesting place for hawker fare. The food stalls and restaurants along Jonker Street provide great shopping (little knick knacks and toys no longer available Singapore surface in the may make-shift stalls in the night in this area) and dining experiences (fancy eating in a restaurant where you go through the kitchen first before entering the restaurant, along Jalan Tukang Besi). The footpaths are narrow and one finds oneself competing with cars for what little pedestrain space there is. Having said this, I am not complaining as this is what the charm of melaka is all about it. One gets the feeling of being thrown back in time here.

2h30 to get there from Johor Bahru by coach bus (Express Delima) but, unfortunately, the return trip took 5h30 with the same company (Express Delima) due to a breakdown on the expressway.

Do try out the Capitol Satay that serves a wide range of satay, fantastic satay sauce!
