Stayed at  Langkawi Village Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
I would recommend the Lighthouse restaurant. Excellent food and lovely location. We hired a car for a day and this was plenty of time for us to see the island. We would recommend the cable car ride but be warned - it is very high!

The best way to see Langkawi is to hire a car (RM135 for 24 hours). The cable car (quite new, and not mentioned in some of the literature) is definately worth a visit and costs very little. There's also a mock Asian village at the foot of the cable car. It's also worth driving up to the other peaks - just make sure you have enough petrol to heat up and back, we had to stop just before the top for fear of running out! We also visited some of the other hotels for a couple of meals - the Silver Shell Cafe at the Mutiara has a lovely ambience.

Stayed at  Beach Garden Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Just short distance walk to the "Rice-Museum" and "Underwater-world". Both worth to visit. For all the other trips you should go by taxi or rent a car. Taxi-prices are fixed and fair, not necessary to bargain.

Recommend beach walks, cafes, swimming along Pantai Cenanang and Pantai Tengah. Snorkelling trip to Pulau Payar worthwhile. Hire a car and drive round the island. If you have the money to spend and want a real dinner experience - go have dinner at the Bon Ton restaurant.

Stayed at  Tanjung Rhu Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
The journey time to and from the hotel is approx 30 minutes which isn't bad! You can do a bit of site seeing along the way, taking in the local architecture, wildlife and fauna! Our trip to Underwater World was fun and the crocodile farm was ok, if you like that kind of stuff! The only unpleasant part of the outing was our taxi driver who was not so friendly and sometimes pushy in selling excursions!

Langkawi at Tanjung Rhu is a beautiful island getaway. Culturally, it doesn't compare to other places we've been in Asia, but for relaxation and a beach holiday, I doubt it can beat!

Stayed at  Pelangi Beach & Spa Resort - Langkawi, Malaysia.
Relaxed solely on Pentai Cenang didn't feel need to venture beyond. Restaurants: Laman Rai (opposite to hotel in Rice paddy museum) - beautiful sea food. Mathuri Village (avoid the sun village grill next door which is part of same place). Souvenir shopping in the Sun Village store next door on Pentai Cenang. I would definitely recommend the Indian Ayurvedic Full Body Massage opposite the Casa Del Mar (next door to Pelangi) - an unbelievable experience. Avoid Kuah - nothing to see. Night market hugely overrated, gold shopping a waste of time. Duty free shopping only good for booze & cigarettes.

Second visit to Langkawi in 4 years, it has grown up a bit and is still charming and basically unspoilt. The people are fabulous (we should learn to smile more in EU!) We loved the Bon Ton for its atmosphere, style and the best Asian meal we have ever eaten, anywhere. For sheer luxury and over the top pampering the Datai had our vote. Best day out was with Hamish on the Starlight boat (might be wrong on the name of the boat), he is a real character with plenty of stories of the area and a very interesting Eco Tour of inacessible parts of Langkawi. Watch out for hiring cars & bikes from the small dealers down Pantai Cenang we were told that if stopped by the police we had borrowed the car from a friend! Go to reputable dealer, pay more but be safe. Loved our holiday and would stay at the Beach Garden if we went again, recommended to laid back travellers!

You need a car to go around the island. Rented car is easily available at a reasonable rental. Petrol costs slightly higher. Foods are not expensive. I am shocked and unhappy because a bottle of JackDaniel's (1 litre) which cost only RM48-00 was taxed RM80-00. I might be just unlucky to meet the moody custom officer at that time. Because of the taxation (unfair) I advised my friends not to buy liquor. I was taxed because I did not stay for more than 72 hours. The stay in Langkawi was good but the image of the custom was poor.

Malaysia is a very friendly, laidback place, and Langkawi is the best place to go in southeast Asia if you want to relax. To make your stay even better… First of all, when you get to Langkawi airport, rent a car! I heard you need an international license to rent a car, but the guy next to me at the counter was showing a local license from the U.S., and it seemed to be OK. (Contact sr_langkawi@yahoo.com.my to verify.) Taxis are relatively expensive for southeast Asia, and rental cars are cheap. I got the small 850cc Cancil (pronounced Kan-cheel) for about US$13 a day, including insurance. (You can definitely spend more per day on taxis if you go around a lot.) The gas tank is almost empty when you rent the car, so go straight to a gas station and fill it up. Gas stations are clean, well-lit at night, most of them are open 24-hours, and they are almost all self-service. That’s where the big, pleasant surprise hits you - - gasoline is about US 40 cents a liter (so about $1.50 a gallon), which is a gift from heaven if you’ve come from Japan or Europe. One tank lasted me a full week, and I was driving every day.

Second, if you love the sea, and if you love scuba diving, take my word and skip the scuba diving in Langkawi. Actually the diving place is Payar Pular (Pular Island), about an hour’s boat ride from Langkawi. Snorkeling on the beach is fantastic. Baby sharks up to a meter long come up in knee-deep water to eat your leftovers after lunch, and you can literally reach out and touch them. There are also a couple stray barracuda (watch your fingers & toes!), about the same size as the sharks, along with zillions of brightly multi-colored fish. The lunch is good too. But the scuba diving usually sucks, mainly because of the poor visibility. I got my PADI basic underwater license there in 2000, and on one of my first dives, the visibility was only 1-2 meters. This past visit (Sep. 2004), I went one day, two dives, and the visibility was 2-8 meters. All of the scuba divers had more fun on the beach at lunch time than in the sea scuba diving (the best diving I’ve done is in Bali, Indonesia and Boracay Island, Philippines.)
