The solution to escape this 'beachless' hotel is to pay for a trip to the neighbouring islands which are wonderful snorkel places.
We went to a restaurant one night called Fisherman's Market with a cultural show. You pick your own seafood and have it prepared.
We also went to a popular spot with tourists:
the Cafe at the former Cathay Cinema where food, both Western and Asian, is very reasonably priced. Drinks as well. Service is brisk.

KK itself is a sprawling concrete jungle with apparently very few restaurants, but fortunately there are other much more appealing places to travel to in Sabah.

Only restaurants were in the hotel. They were good but pricey and boring after a while.

The town of Kota Kinabalu is filthy and there is nothing do to there. However, if you take a boat ride to many of the nearby islands, true paradise can be found. Beautiful dessert islands with golden sandy beaches, jungles and coral reefs.
