The solution to escape this 'beachless' hotel is to pay for a trip to the neighbouring islands which are wonderful snorkel places. We went to a restaurant one night called Fisherman's Market with a cultural show. You pick your own seafood and have it prepared. We also went to a popular spot with tourists: the Cafe at the former Cathay Cinema where food, both Western and Asian, is very reasonably priced. Drinks as well. Service is brisk.

Must try Italian food in Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort. Value for money. If u are interested to have seafood, try Ocean View Seafood Restaurant behind plaza Wawasan.

No visits, nor tours, nor restaurants outside hotel. Local buses easy to use.

KK itself is a sprawling concrete jungle with apparently very few restaurants, but fortunately there are other much more appealing places to travel to in Sabah.

Never been to Borneo before but it was a new experience and we were satisfied.

T Stuth 17 October 2000
Stayed at  Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
Only restaurants were in the hotel. They were good but pricey and boring after a while.

The town of Kota Kinabalu is filthy and there is nothing do to there. However, if you take a boat ride to many of the nearby islands, true paradise can be found. Beautiful dessert islands with golden sandy beaches, jungles and coral reefs.

There is a very nice sea food restaurant near the hotel.
