There is not much to do in Kota Kinabalu Town apart from the beach and water activities. However Mount Kinabalu is just 2 hours away and the park is fabulous. The trek to the top is hard work, but worth it. You do need cold weather gear, waterproofs and good boots in order to make the climb. Book your trek well ahead of time.
Taxis are fairly cheap but don't always have meters.

There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. Although if you are planning on eco travel such as visiting the turtle islands and the Orangutan Rehab. centre in Sepilok you would be better off planning to stay in Sandakan for a few nights. It is possible to visit Sepilok in a day trip but it does involve a early morning flight which results in a very long day. Albiet well worth it though. To visit other attractions such as the turtle islands or the Caves you have to stay over night. Getting around is very easy.
There are some waterfront restaurants that you can walk to from the resort, or the hotel has a shuttle that takes you into town. It is only a 10 minute trip and taxis are cheap and abundant so they are also a good option. There are some great Indian, Chinese and Thai restaurants in town and plenty of interesting sights and shopping. Western food is abundant also plus the varitey of restaurants within the resort would cater to most peoples needs. The Italian restaurant is supposedly the best in town and we were not dissappointed. If you are looking to party it may not be the place to go the nightlife in KK is fairly laid back and your options are minimal.

The resort is a little isolated but the concierge and activities officer had something planned for everyday...Note though that the jungle walk is not something for kids...quite hard.

Great if you stay in one of the beach side resorts and are not desirous of stepping out. Very little to do in the city and hardly any restaurants/shopping worth the name

Would not recommend the water-village tour. Very dirty up-close with lots of trash thrown in the water. A definite turn-off.

We loved the location of the hotel. Only two tours undertaken - a trip on the railway and a boat trip to the islands, both of which were excellent. We only ate in the Garden Terrace Restaurant which we found of a high standard.

A pleasant venue in an interesting part of town. Tours taken were interesting and service was of good standard. The night market was great.

The Orang Tang's are a must see, the antics are very entertaining, a pleasure to watch. The Sunday Market bike ride was a great way to get some exercise, see some of the local culture. The market were interesting, bargins were very easy to find. A massage is a pleasant way to ensure that all of your muscles are relaxed after your ride into town.

Taxis services were variable, some I know really overcharged us, why do you not have meters? Internal flights were very well organised. The people we met were very friendly and helpful.
The country is beautiful. Some of the trips can be long and tiring, more information should be given out before trips are booked, as we saw some older people who were really struggling on some of the trips, it is only fair that they are told how strenuous some of the trips are going to be.
Went to spidan for diving this was well organised, however there is no mention anywhere of which months are good or bad to dive there. We were told that in August a lot of Italian divers were very angry that they were not warned that August could be a bad month for scuba diving due to weather condtions. They were going to make a big complaint. To not let them know up front weather condtions is not fair as the cost of diving was very expensive, and if you do not dive it has been a waste of money.
