KK is a very nice change from towns in the Peninsula. Loved the islands and the beach, too bad I forgot my camera! Plus the Filipino market is good for souvenir hunting. Was impressed by the size of the town, still much to explore, will definitely pay another visit.

Kota Kinabalu was only a transit point for us between climbing and diving, so we only had a short stay at the hotel. But we ate at a Chinese food restaurant, Canton House, that was recommended by the hotel, and had great dim sum and soup. We then wandered around the downtown area, bought ice cream, and enjoyed people-watching in the city. It was easy to hail a cab back to the hotel from the downtown area.

Kota Kinabalu itself is very small but provides a gateway to numerous activities including all water sports, climbing and eco trips.

There are lots of things to go an see in the local area - it might be worth hiring a car and driver - this allows you to see sites that the tour bus doesn't go to ( and you can see them at a pace that suits you). You should also go out to some of the beaches on the islands - great for snorkelling.

KK is OK - a bit of a concrete jungle after Kuching though. Get out to the islands from the KK jetty - beautiful.
Taxi drivers operate on a fixed price basis and collude to make sure that the fixed prices are about 3 times what they should be!!

Kota Kinabalu is a great place for a luxury break especially after roughing it out in the wilds of Borneo.

The 5 island tour is definately worth going on, although the snorkeling does not compare to over places we have visited, however the beaches are great.
The North Borneo express is a must if you are into steam trains and nostalgia for the old days of the Empire.
Visit the Rasa Ria resort for the Orang Utans, but do NOT stand under them while they are playing on the overhead ropes!
Excellent seafood at the KK Seafood Market.

Kota Kinabalu is now improving, thanks to a "cleaning" policy from the gov.
We spent one week diving in Lankayan, very good spot and not as crowded as Sipadan. Worth it, check on www.diveborneo.com.
