Stayed at  Hyatt Regency Kinabalu - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
Sabah state offers various kinds of top vacation options, which you can combine based on your priorities. We had stays in Sipadan (diving), Sukau (Jungle), Pulau Tiga ("Survivor Island"), Kinabalu Park (hot springs, mountain top canopy walkway, flowers) and finally KK (shopping), which made it a close to perfect vacation for me and my family. We have already booked again to go to Sabah.

Tengku Abdul Rahman Marine Reserve is a must visit. Less than 10min from the Hotel. Clear waters, abundant marine life.

Good location, and taxis were great. Found wonderful places to eat along the sea wall. The snorkelling here was fantastic (on the outer islands) and we should have stayed here longer. We went over to Sandakan, thinking there would be better snorkelling, but it is a 2 day trip from here.

We enjoyed a week in Sabah, but only a couple of nights at your resort. During this time, we visited Mount Kinabalu, the coral-fringed islands off Kota Kinabalu's coastline and Sepilok Orang Utan Centre. All these attractions are worth visiting, but if you have the time and energy you must take up the challenge of Mount Kinabalu. The pain is temporary but the memories are forever!

You can hire a local taxi for about RM320 a day who will take you to KK National Park and then on to the Hot Springs. If you get one that speaks English this can be a good way to do this trip. KK is a great place and lots to do in terms of beach chilling, walking in hills, jungle exploring etc. Ask in details about trips before doing them - we were going to go white water rafting before we found out we would leave at 6.30am and return at 8pm and only get 1.5 hours of white water rafting.

My advise to travellers is not to hire private cars not until the transportation fare is made known to you. I requested for a transport from Hot Poring Spring to Perkasa Hotel and was told it is around M$65 or so. So, thought that should be alright, got on the transport, which is a private car and was not made known before, travel to Perkasa which took about 60 minutes drive from Hot Poring. When I got down the car and asked for the fare, the driver said M$120.00!? No question asked as I do not want to pick up an argument, I paid him M$120.00. I was shocked when the next day I booked a taxi from Perksasa Hotel to Beverly Hotel in Kota Kinabalu which took 2 hours of drive cost me just M$60.00. WOW!?!? So learnt my lesson from this trip.

Stayed at  Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Resort - Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
Kotakinabalu itself has little of interest to recommend it other than to do a bit of shopping and the Sunday street market is worth a visit. After dark, we did feel threatened so kept to the main thoroughfares and experienced no real problems. There are some good restaurants in the town and the sea food is superb and cheap, particularly good are The Ocean on JL Tun Fuad Stephen, The Suang Tain Seafood, Sedco Square and The Tham Nak Thai near the Api Api Centre. We used the Hotel Shuttle Bus a lot or Taxis. During our stay we also took the tours to Sepilok Orang Utan reserve, The Five Islands Tour and Mount Kinabalu all of which we enjoyed.

Kota Kinabalu has lots of great cheap eats. I recommend Jothy's Fish Head Indian Cafe at the Api Api centre.

The Jothy Banana Leaf indian restaurant was nice if you like Indian food and very reasonably priced.
