The location of the hotel is not convenient to anything. We took a taxi to a local shopping center (~10 minutes), but the other times my aunt or uncle picked us up. There were no shops/restaurants within walking distance (except for the hotel shops/restaurants). The caves in Ipoh were great, but cannot be reached very conveniently from any hotel in Ipoh.

We found that there wasn't a lot to see in Ipoh itself, but this may be due to the fact that the tourist office was closed on the day we were there - so could not get any walking tour brochures.
We had a hire car so drove the the following places:
We visited Kellie's castle - highly recommended.
We went to Tempurung caves. We took the short Golden Flow tour. The cave does other longer, more adventurous trips, you need to take a change of clothes for these!

Sorry, can't give much comment on destination as I was only there for a day. But the location of the Heritage is quite convenient as it's not too far away from the city.

Only on food: I'd like to recommend Assam House if you can take spicy food; Chow Yuen Fatt was there too when he shot Anna and the King. Try also roadside stalls.

Speedsters better be careful. There's a whole bunch of traffic policemen on duty on the North-South expressway that are waiting for speeding motorists to come by so that they can impose a 'toll' on them. Typical toll charges are RM50, sometimes bargainable to RM30. Note that they love to target Singapore cars. I saw them letting go a couple of Malaysian cars flying past at 160kmph while stopping a Singapore car behind them that was going at approx. 120kmph.

We hired a taxi on an hourly rate of RM$ 25. Good value. Driver spoke good English and knew the sights tourist were interested in. We had lived there some 15 years ago and weren't interested in touristy spots but wanted to go to places that were of specific interest eg our old house, the club, the school etc. Driver very good and patient.

very convenient to go from one place to another. We went to Ipoh Padang (shopping and food on highest floor - many selections to choose from) and Taman Chenpekar(to surf net and read mail - food there super too).
