Stayed at  Kowloon Hotel, The - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
When you look at a map of HK, it looks very big, but one grid on the map is like 1 footstep so don't worry about going around. MTR and ferry is super friendly to foreigners, bus is not so much. So I usually took mtr then walked around. Taxi was not that expensive but most of the drivers had some problem communicating in English. Tram was not only fun, but also super value, it only costs HK$2 no matter how far you go. I personally found very useful to go around Admirality (Pacific Place) to Central or Western. In Tsim Sha Tsui, you can definitely cover everything just by walking around.

There are many places to shop in HK, but those too-tourists-oriented malls seemed too crowded or too expensive. My favorite was Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong, few stations away from Tsim Sha Tsui to north. They also have a small ice skating rink and very nice AMC (yes the one in the States) multiplex with 11 or so screens.

Speaking of cinema, some recommended UA Pacific Place. That's also good choice, the thetre felt very posh, and had very nice sound system. However, non-stadium seats were not so comfortable after sitting for more than 3 hrs to watch Return of the King. The neck also felt little stiff since I had took 'up' most of time. So I preffered AMC's modern multiplex although it didn't have much flair like UA's.

Get an Octopus card and collect all the tourist pamphlets/maps you can at the airport and you'll be set. For the most part, Hong Kong is a very tourist friendly city. Just remember to bring along those comfortable walking shoes. Unless you're their for business, Kowloon is probably better as a central hotel location than Hong Kong itself as we spent 80% of our stay touring off the island.

Stayed at  Bishop Lei International - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong - always a favourite city with my husband and I. This was my 4th visit there and I was pleasantly surprised to find that the standard of customer service in the shops has really improved and many of the streets look really clean now. Causeway Bay is a great area for walking around if you enjoy shopping, eating or just being where lots of people are. There's an excellent local dessert place in that area along Lockhart Road (walking distance from Causeway Bay MTR station) that is famous for its "dun nai" and dun dan" (steamed milk dessert and steamed egg dessert -- both look and taste like a really smooth, soft custard). I can't remember the name of the place offhand, but there is a picture of a cow on the shop sign and logo. Ask the locals when you're in that area, they should be able to direct you.

Stayed at  Concourse, Hotel - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
Half of the fun of HKG is trying the many forms of transport, you can also see many of the island attractions on foot, also good to take the overland train out of the busy hub to see some of the quieter places, temples and gardens. Much to see and do, highlight would be the star ferry and view from the peak. Excellent destination and also recommended for short break.

Stayed at  Stanford Hillview Hotel - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong was such a wonderful destination. We loved being in Kowloon, the shopping, the restaurants. Everyone we spoke with spoke English, street signs and information is all in Chinese and English so getting around is very easy. We did not feel unsafe anywhere and the climate at this time of year (early December) is perfect. We will definitely go back to Hong Kong.

T Feldhaus 10 December 2003
Stayed at  YMCA - The Salisbury - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
We visited in three days the Lady's night market, temple market, Jingle bell street, the nunnery, the peak tram, a temple, jade market and made a round trip with the normal bus. Don't be afraid to visit Hongkong you will find english signages everywhere and so are english speaking people. I'm a german and it was not a problem to travel around there. Take information before from the internet and plan your days for a short trip before and enjoy Hongkong.

Stayed at  Royal Garden Hong Kong, The - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
I recommend "Bamboo Garden Seafood Restaurant" which is located nearby Hyatt Regency.

J Schneider 06 December 2003
Stayed at  Bishop Lei International - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong's trendy restaurants and bars are all within walking distance of the hotel, so you can't go wrong wandering around looking for a place to eat. For a quick lunch or take-away dinner, I recommend Chicken on the Run, which is right off the escalators and only a few blocks from the hotel.

Be careful when buying expensive electronic equipment from stores that ask for payment in cash. We bought a camera that was a japanese model but the seller was not totally honest about this. Although the camera works fine and has an English menu, I would have appreciated the honesty and not felt cheated.

J Beane 02 December 2003
Stayed at  Eaton Hotel - Hong Kong, Hong Kong.
We visited the Big Buddha at the Po Lin Monastery on Lantau Island. Despite a long lineup for the bus on Sunday, we were impressed by the efficiency of the service. We really enjoyed this trip into the countryside. A good respite from shopping.

We also highly recommend the Hong Kong Art Museum. At the airport, we bought a 3-day transport pass which included return fare to the airport & MTR subway pass -excellent value if you are planning to travel around the city. Using the city check-in at the Kowloon Station relieved us of all the usual hassles at the airport. A great idea.
