Local travel in Nadi area is best by taxi or shuttles arranged by the hotel. One drawback is that tours offered by the resort only run if enough people register. A great way to see the island is a day trip to Suva. About three hours driving each way, but you see the landscape, other hotels on the coral coast and spend a few hours in the capital.

We stayed at a range of other places - back packers in the Yasawas, upmarket resort at Wananavu - north of main island, middle of road hotel on outskirts of Suva and the Fijian Resort - on balance felt the lower priced hotels gave better value overall and especially on meals compared with the upmarket ones - but were not especially comfortable, the more upmarket ones had comfortable rooms and very mediocre overpriced food. We drove around the island in a rental car - not a great deal to see - almost no petrol stations or food stalls outside main centres - the road between Raki-Raki and Suva was almost a 4 wheel drive track. A trip into the highlands would be very slow - 4WD essential.

I had been to Fiji 22 years before and had a cherished memory of it. When the opportunity came to bring my husband here I leapt at it and again took a cruise. This time we took the Captain Cook cruise led by Tui on the Spirit of the Pacific, a 2 masted schooner for 4 days.
It was fun, interesting and a learning experience. Our group of 11 ranged in age from 23 to 65 and ranged in swimming levels from paddlers to highly able. All enjoyed the snorkelling especially the 1st timers who gained a great sense of achievement. We learned the Kava ceremony, traditional dancing, visited a village, and listened nightly to the beautiful harmonies of the crew who sang not to entertain us but for their own great pleasure in singing songs of the South Pacific. We enjoyed the warm waters of the beach at our door, and showers by starlight. I highly recommend it to those who like a little adventure.
Restaurants - We enjoyed the food and air conditioning at RJ's across from the Dominion Hotel and the Chef's behind Jack's trading store in Nadi.

If you can take the Adventure tour. We were heading to another island and could not make it. The tour leaves at 7am and comes back at 6pm. All flights to the neighboring islands have to leave before nightfall. Plan ahead really helps.
