Stayed at Grand Hotel, Beijing - Beijing, China.

Beijing has so much to offer. The Winter time is not crowded. Make sure you visit the Great Wall (the Mutianyu section of the wall is very good; take the ski lift to the top of the mountain and ride the toboggan down; lots of fun), the Ming Tombs (Dingling Museum), The Summar Palace, The Temple of Heaven, etc. You should also see the acrobatic show at The Beijing Chao Yang Theater (5:15 show is not crowded, 200 RMB for front row seats).

Stayed at Sakura Hotel Kunming - Kunming, China.

The traffic in Kunming is very, very bad. However, the trips to both the Stone Forest and the Western Hills are worth the trouble and time.

Stayed at Prime Hotel Beijing - Beijing, China.

We visited The Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Great Wall, Ming Tombs and The Summer Palace. All were very impressive. Try and see an Acrobats Show but get the cheap tickets, as generally no difference in the view.

Wanna be noticed in China? I took my dad to see the great wall and it was COLD, so he bought a fur hat with the red star on it - everywhere we went people were pointing and chatting about the star. Some even backtracked to look at it! So before you buy, or wear anything, check it's meaning! Third time in Beijing for me - but only the first time for Peking Roast Duck - don't miss out - make sure you go to a good restaurant to have it - delicious!!! Don't let the bus or guide/ taxi driver drive past the Sacred Road on the way to the Ming Tombs - ask them to drop you at the begining of it and take a walk - very interesting.

Stayed at Harmony Hotel - Beijing, China.

We did SIC tours to Great Wall (at Mutianwu) and in beginning of January (minus 5 deg celcius), it was very scenic with snow-covered hills and we virtually had the whole place to ourselves. Wrap up warm, as it can be very cold.
Tried Peking duck in 3 different restaurants - Quan jude was definitely the best and worth the money.

Stayed at Paradise Hill Hotel Zhuhai - Zhuhai, China.

From the local bus stop outside hotel, you can take bus to The New Yuan Ming Palace, a rare imitation of an ancient tourism attraction, with free performances (included in admission price) starting at 11 am to 5 pm. Don't miss the 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm show called "Grand Qing Dynasty". It's free if you sit in the second section (too far back to see) and cost about 20 RMB to sit in front section for better view & its worth it for the small extra cost.

Stayed at Broadway Mansions Shanghai - Shanghai, China.

It only costs $15 rmb taxi to get to Yu Yuen which we enjoyed very much. The walk from the Hotel to the Bund was easy and pleasant. Shopping is not close enough but it's ok with inexpensive taxi rides.

Stayed at Universal Hotel, Guilin - Guilin, China.

A free bus service operates to many of the major tourist sites in Guilin, including Reed Flute Cave which is somewhat out of town. The taxi fare from the airport into Guilin seems to be fixed at Y100 (drivers will not use their meters), but upon returning to the airport, drivers do use their meters and the cost is about Y75, raised to about Y85 or Y90 if the passengers have luggage. When travelling by taxi in China, passengers pay any extra road tolls, either at the time or added on to the fare at the end of the trip.

I was visiting Beijing with my wife for 7 days beginning Christmas, and the highest temperature was -1 Celsius. Be sure to bundle up. Cost performance for Food and Tranportation is high whilst the standard historical sites (Forbidden City and Great Wall) are very disappointing. The snow makes the sites very picturesque but the ambience is horrible -- be sure to seek an English-speaking Guide. The guidance is worth the money.
Other than the historical site visits, massages are a boom in Beijing and very affordable. My wife and I found a handful of places where they serve tea (sometimes included) and 80 minutes worth of massage for less than 20 USD. The quality was fabulous and my wife and often shared a room where we drank tea discussed our tales of the day. It appears they have established a very legitimate business targetting primarily women (but men are very well welcome too).

Trips to the Great Wall are fairly standard in content wherever you book them. You will pay more to do it through the hotel and there are a lot of people around Tiananmen and the Forbidden City who offer tours at a lower rate. Expect to be taken to a Jade factory and a rather dubious 'Institute of Traditional Medicine', where a 'distinguished professor' will look at your tongue and ask a few questions via a salesperson disguised as a translator before telling you that you would be healthier if you bought some of his medicine. Then back to the Jade factory for lunch (which was pretty good!) before you get to the Great Wall. Still better than trying to get there by public transport.
