C Thorburn 02 April 2005
Stayed at  Jianguo Hotel Xian - Xian, China.
We travelled to tourist destinations by taxi with prearranged price. Cost for group of 5 was 400Y and taxi took us to Terricotta Warriors, Jade factory (unplanned), The Springs, Qin museum and tomb. Walled city and attractions easily walked around. Local map for places like Wild Goose Pagoda were very confusing. Lack of street signs and language barrier with locals didn't help the situation.

H Hogeweg 02 April 2005
Stayed at  Novotel Peace Hotel Beijing - Beijing, China.
The Great Wall at Mutianyu is fantastic, not crowded and not too far away. The drive from Mutianyu to the Ming Tombs was excellent. Through countryside, mountains and farmland. Absolutely a tip for everyone. Xian by train should be included in one package. Great trip, good trains, good connection and Bobo was a fine guide. She really showed us what we liked to see.

I Alsleben 29 March 2005
Stayed at  Resort Horizon Sanya - Haikou, China.
We went to the Underwaterworld and took the "submarine" to go to the reef. We also visited the Butterfly farm (both in Yalong Bay within 5 minutes drive from the Hotel). I can recommend both to families with kids.

A Kowalski 28 March 2005
Stayed at  Prime Hotel Beijing - Beijing, China.
Our favorite restaurant was Han Ke Jia, a Hakka restaurant located on the east bank of Quianhai Lake, 50 m north of Beihai Park. We asked the hotel to write the restaurant name in Chinese characters for us. When we arrived at the restaurant we showed the card to one of the staff and she pointed us down the road. After walking around (lost) for a bit, we found a nice Chinese man (fluent in English) that pointed us back to the restaurant where we had originally been turned away! Sure enough, this was the place. The food was fabulous (menu with english translation) - not spicey hot but incredibly flavorful. We had not tasted Chinese food like this before. The atmosphere was very casual and loud enough that the loud voices of our 2 children went unnoticed. The service was excellent and the food arrived soon after we ordered. All of us, 11 months old to 64 years old loved the food. AND the bill which included 8 dishes, rice, beer and soft drinks for 5 adults/2 children was less than $30 USD.

The restaurant location was fabulous (about a 10 minute cab ride for the Prime Hotel) and on Quianhai lake. On the west side of the lake there were many wonderful/posh/relatively new bars/restaurants. If we were sans children, we would have visited one or two of the bars! This is also the area for the Hutong tours - beautiful and a nice contrast to the large scale of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. The cabs are really limited in where they can drive and where they can drop off and pick up passengers. In one case we were dropped off to go to a Peking Duck restaurant (south of Tiananmen Square) and had about a 5 minute walk to get to the restaurant from the drop off point. We asked lots of folks along the way for directions! Also, do not get in a cab without a meter - or negotiate price before using a cab without a meter. In one case a cabbie tried to charge us 4 times the usual rate. We knew what was happening and ended up giving the cabbie half of his asking rate -still too much!

The fact that the majority of restaurants and other businesses are only marked by Chinese characters made navigating the city very difficult for this english speaking family. We hired an english speaking guide to give us a tour of the Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall at Badaling. This cost us 450 rmb for 1.5 days (about 12 hours)of her time (very reasonable) and made the experience incredibly enjoyable. We wish we had her along when attempting to find restaurants!

M Lau 28 March 2005
Stayed at  Shangri-La Hotel, Zhongshan - Zhongshan, China.
Zhongshan is a relative safe city in Guangdong. The roads are very well built. I went to Dr. Sun Yat Sen 's memorial park and a place named Zhongshan Shing. The memorial park is quite an interesting place as it reveals the good old living style of people of Guangdong in the 19th Century.

J Zee 25 March 2005
Stayed at  White Swan Hotel - Guangzhou, China.
The highlight of our visit to GZ was our visit to the Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King dated back to more than 2000 years ago and discovered in 1983. It was very impressive to see the relics excavated and the layout of the tomb. From there, we walked over to the Yue-Xiu Park closed by. We sat near a pond to have our lunch bought at 7-11 and then we spent the rest of the afternoon checking out the Five Ram statue and the Chung San Memorial hall, etc. This is a worthwhile place to visit if you are in GZ.

V Sudraud 24 March 2005
Stayed at  Jinjiang Tower - Shanghai, China.
Of course Xin Tian Di and french concession area. Very nice restaurant "The Face" in an old house or "M on the Bund" for a more glamourous and trendy style. Fantastic view on the Bund from the terrace.

R Lewis 21 March 2005
Stayed at  Harbour Plaza Hotel Kunming - Kunming, China.
Kunming is pleasant and has wonderful weather ("the CIty of Eternal Spring") but has little to see. Kunming is, however, the take-off spot for wonderful places like Lijiang, Dali, and Zhongdian (Shangrila), which is the REAL reason to come to Yunnan.

K Ruusaknen 21 March 2005
Stayed at  Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.
Without question, buy pearls in Beijing. There are two or three good places, the hotel staff can give you directions to give the taxi driver. The old Silk Market (Russian Market) has moved to a new building and isn't so much fun, but you can still get good bargains.

V Musumeci 17 March 2005
Stayed at  Lu Song Yuan Hotel - Beijing, China.
Check out the Houhai lake area for some cool bars and restaurants. It is about a 15min walk from the hotel and staff will be more than happy to help with directions.
