Don't go during Japanese Golden Week. Not because of the Japanese tourists, but because it is also a Chinese holiday. VERY crowded everywhere.

We greatly enjoyed our visit to Beijing. It is a city rich in history and culture as well as offering modern facilities and shopping to suit all pockets. It is vital when shopping to bargain and a general rule of thumb is to deduct 60 to 70% from the asking price to determine the real value of an item.
In comparison to Hong Kong, Beijingers are extremely friendly and non-aggressive. Language is a major issue when moving around Beijing as few people either write or read English so its worthwhile learning some Chinese phrases and getting the hotel staff to write down the name of your destination in Chinese to show to taxi drivers etc - this will save a lot of time and stress!
In large part Beijing resembles London or any other major world city and it is to be hoped that the culture and architecture of the city is not completely lost in the desirable need for development.
I would recommend Beijing as a holiday destination to anyone - the Great Wall and the Forbidden City are worth the airfare themselves!

If you are traveling from Beijing I highly recommend to take the Train (Z). It takes 12 hours but you will have a great bed to sleep with dinner included. Take a look into the next web page to check it out: http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20040801_train_from_beijing_to_shanghai.htm

While in Beijing I visited Great Wall of China by booking a tour @ RMB 180/- per person, this included Good lunch, Tickets to Great Wall and Ming Tomb. Ticket at Harmony was expensive, so I walked to Youth Hostel in China Post Office building and found a cheap but good tour.
Temple of Heavens was travelled by own, used a taxi to go to Temple. It was a good visit. Taxi's in Beijing are cheaper.
Tiaanmen Square and adjoining places like forbidden city and area around is worth seeing of your own. Forbidden city ticket counter closes by 3.30PM, so go their early.
Wan-fu-jung street is close by, taxi takes 10 RMB, one can even walk back- a cool 2 Km.
Overall Beijing is a happening place and one can spent 3-4 days comfortably.

We visited the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. The last two sites we took a local tour arranged by ourselves. The Peking duck restaurant near the Tianamen Square was superb and value for money. We should visit Beijing again in the near future. It is necessary to acquire a working knowledge of mandarin before venturing out on your own.

Stayed at Guilin Bravo Hotel - Guilin, China.

Walking round the lakes, from the hotel is an excellent 40- 60 min exercise. The city's shopping area was too touristic. The trip on Li river was a great experience! Don't waste your time in Guilin to long. Stay over in Yangshuo, don't rush back to Guilin.

If you go to Great Wall at Badaling go early and not on a weekend. Skip the Ming Tombs. Have duck at Quanjude Kaoyadian...shopping at the Panjiayuan Market should NOT be missed...if you go to the Silk Alley Market don't buy from the first level (same stuff on the second at half the price and easy to bargain with). Make time to visit the parks.

At the Lo Wu Shopping center, top floor, great "Yam-cha" (Dim sum restaurants) can be found at very reasonable prices.
And yes, remember to always bargain during your shopping spree at the shopping center. ENJOY : )

One tour not worth doing is the 3 hour river boat trip, if you have to do a river tour then 1 hour is enough unless you enjoy seeing cranes and more cranes. My best trip was to Suzhou & Zhou Zhuang water village and the city tour is fine although both include the inevitable silk factory. The city is more modern with little pockets of the old way of life. Shanghai is worth a visit but personally I would not stay much longer than about 4 days.

For Shanghai: Thumbs up to M on the Bund for brunch, Jean Georges for dinner, Xintiandi for shopping, the new art area (can't remember the name). Over-rated are the French Concession, 3 on the Bund for shopping, Shanghainese food.
