Take the subway to the Lama temple - its my favorite place in Beijing and easy to reach (a subway station on the circle line is named Lama Temple).
A good restuarant with a local flavor can be found near the new Silk Market building. At the corner where the market is located, turn right and walk past the DVD stores and you will soon come to a restaurant. They have one english menu. I had pork and tofu, and it was delicious, for 18 RMB. For good Beijing duck, try the Duck King, near the Macdonalds in front of the SciTech Plaza. Bargain hard at the Silk Market. Don't be surprised if you pay less than 1/5 of the original asking price. Walk away a few times to get an idea of what the real price should be.

Check out Uncle Sam's shop on West Street to arrange tours of the surrounding area. No hassle approach to exploring the area. We went hot airballooning and hired kayaks and went paddling downstream from Yangshuo and had the river to ourselves.

Bought some fake watches for friends and myself. Don't buy from the guys at Nanjing Road. Go to the fake market. Don't pay more than 20 EURO, doesn't matter what they tell you. I was shopping at the Decathlon outlet. It's worth the trip to Padong. Decathlon is french sports outfitter that is really huge and prices are unbelievable.

Some very good restaurants in the neigbourhood. Check the one on the mainstreet (sechuan) or/and ask the staff for local restaurants. Don't forget the Buddhist Lama Temple. It's one of the highlites of Beijing in our opinion.
and....please say hi to the family in the small shop across the street (what a nice kid they have).

Across the street there is a small walk-in street market with a large variety of clothes, jewelry, bags, etc. If you go there, you can find some incredible deals (if you make the right offers). I bought sunglasses there. The quoted price was 130. I paid 10. I also bought a bag there for 30 that was quoted at 175 and a cell phone holder for 30 that was quoted at 195. Just make an offer and when they say no, walk away. If you go out the hotel and turn left up Xidan Bei, you can get a subway ride directly to Wang Fujing Da Jie. This is the famous shopping street in Beijing. There are many shops, as well as a small street market. At the street market, I bought two brass dragons that were quoted at 195 for one. I paid 50 for two. There is also the famous Peking Duck restaurant (Qunjudao, I believe) at Wang Fujing. The name is in Chinese, so you will need to ask. I have been there twice now and will go there everytime I am in Beijing -- It is SO good! The hotel is also very near Tianamin square and the Forbidden City. The last time I was there, I hired a taxi from Tianamin square and he took me to the great wall and showed me around for the day. It was 150 for the entire day. Near Wang Fujing is also street famous for the food vendors. There are many carts there selling assorted food on-a-stick. Wandering that street and purchasing assorted goodies is almost a full night. They have beef, goat, lamb, chicken, insects, worms, fruit and even ice cream.

We used subway and walking as our main ways of getting around, taxi only being used to transfer to the railway station. walking enabled us to see more of the city, a good example was the walk from Xintiandi to the Wu Gardens, walking down Dajing Lu from Renmin Lu to Henan Nanlu and then onto Fanbang Zhonglu gives a great insight into Shanghai life. As a first time visitor to China, crossing the roads was a challenge, however main junctions have traffic Assistants who help greatly. The best sights for us were the Wu Gardens and Shanghai Museum. We travelled by train to Suzhou, soft seat was fine and cheap, there is a ticket window at shanghai railway station clearly marked for english speakers, buy your tickets a day or so early, I didn't and had to opt for my third choice train time. The soft seat waiting room is comfortable and well organised, we used it again when travelling by train to Beijing. www.china-train-ticket.com were a problem, my train tickets were not delivered to my hotel, I had to ring their Beijing office to resolve this. After wasting several hours waiting for tickets to be delivered they had bought tickets for a cheaper and later train than they had contracted with me for, I had no more time to pursue this matter and so accepted the situation. On the train the 2 berth compartment was fine but the food in the restaurant car should be given a miss, plan to feed yourself.

Yangshuo is great, albeit pretty touristy on West Street. Brilliant for a long weekend of shopping, scenery, river trips, eating and drinking. It's a good hour and a half from Guilin airport and worth organising a taxi transfer to your hotel if you don't mind paying about $30 each way. As a western tourist, don't accept the first price in the West Street shops as they are just trying to see whether you'll pay over the odds. Start at about 70% below and see how you go. If you're after both scenery and a lively place to be based then stay in Yangshuo rather than Guilin town. Excellent breakfasts at Mei You on West Street. Hire a bike (+ guide if you want to be shown the highlights, although you end up paying a bit more) and definitely go on a bamboo raft. We had a guide called Wendy who was excellent, although there are a plenty of guides to choose from. The river tour from Xing Ping to Yangdi town was very scenic, but if you sign up for the sunrise tour then don't set your expectations too high. For our trip, it poured with rain and so there was no spectacular sunrise. Not sure it was worth getting up at 4.30am for unless you know how to guarantee the sun - the clouds and mist around the mountains were still pretty cool though - very Lord of the Rings. If it's your first trip to China as it was ours, then try not to be put off by the locals spitting in the street - maybe they've just got phlegm problems! Also, if you're a non-smoker then you'll be in the minority.

We used Golden Circle Tours - they have an office on 2nd floor of hotel - to go to see the Terracotta Warriors. It was a great day - 7 of us in a mini-bus and a charming guide called Cassie. We also used them to take us to the airport, with a stop at the Han Yang Museum on the way. Worked out very well and this museum is definitely worth a visit. Also, don't miss the Lamasery in Xi'an - it's lovely.
