Taishan is the central location to visit many of the ancestral homes and villages of overseas Chinese. Many areas are now quite modern (especially near the toll booth of the new multi-lane highway that runs next to Taishan) though many parts of the downtown area hasn't improved over the past 50 years so many visitors wouldn't feel comfortable just walking about especially at night.
Perfect as a centralized location to be able to drive back & forth to one's village in a single day yet able to return to something most westerner's can feel comfortable with at night. Recommend for most returning oversea's Chinese who can't read signs and speak the local dialect that finding one's village will be next to impossible. Once off the major highways, road & street signs are non existent. Same with house numbers. Lots of stopping and asking for directions from the local people you run into on the roads since most villages are located off dirt roads only wide enough for a single vehicle many kilometers from the nearest paved roads.
Existing family members or friends of the family who still live there would be the first choice for transportation services though a prearranged (through CITS or CTS) vehicle with driver and guide is a great alternative especially if you didn't want the whole village to know ahead of time you're coming and the obligations that come along with that. Pack light and bring bottled water. Once outside of Taishan, it's very much a time warp back 50-100 years in most locations.
