Going to Siem Reap I don't see any reason to stay in an expensive hotel since you will be out all day and probably most nights, retiring to your room just long enough for shower and sleep. I recommend staying in a place like the Passagio or even a guest house. For crafts-Artisans D'Angkor. To eat-The Red Piano, Bayon (khmer food), and La Noria.

At Tonle Sap restaurant, I could enjoy Apsara show. It starts from 7:30pm and ends 8:40. The rate is only 12US$/pax. Served with Thai, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese.

We did get around by tuk tuk, the Red Piano is a nice place and for French food. Le Gecko Mayonnaise, having a good massage by the blind for only 3 US dollar by the hour is a must.

Enjoyed the Angkor Temple complexes. Really liked the 2-hour Tonle Sap floating village boat trip--fascinating! Most of all, I loved seeing the rural countryside, rice fields, water buffalo, villages, and asking lots of questions of our guide, re: culture, education, health care, marriage traditions, agriculture, etc. Wonderful opportunity!

Quick 3 day tour of region was amazing. Hiring a driver and guide for Angkor Wat is critical. Saves so much time uhf tune is limited. English speaking Phany Hang can be reached through Passagio, and he is very knowledgeable about Angkor Wat and Cambodian culture and history.

We visited all the "must see" temples including Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. We would recommend studying a bit about Indian mythology to enjoy the relief in Angkor Wat. Be prepare to climb and walk a lot.

Our three days visit to Siem Reap was about the right amount of time needed. Quite surprised that there were not many tourists around while we were there (not that we complained!). Most bars and restaurant at the Old Market area were a bit quiet. The hotel's service and staff atittude were excellent! We were well taken care of by our driver Mr Soum from Angkor Village hotel - reliable and honest! Unlike what we had expected, none tried to rip us off. Friendly smilling Cambodian people really made our visit a lot of fun and memorable - we fell in love with the people. Try to take a boat ride around Tonle Sap and see a glimpse of the real life of poverty stricken Cambodians and Vietnamese illegal immigrants. If you like gemstones, they are comparatively cheaper to buy here, but you'd have to bargain! The quality is vary, so ask and check before buying. We got a very good deal for some good quality ones. Although this destination is expensive for a small town in South-East Asia, the magnificent Temples are worth visiting to!

Cambodians are even more smiley than the Thai. Amazing considering their recent political history.

As compared to Thailand or Vietnam, Angkor/Siem Reap was more expensive than I had originally anticipated, especially because everything was in U.S. dollars - cash only. Recommendations: my English-speaking guide: Pich Sovirak (Virak) pichsovirak@hotmail.com, the Senteurs of Angkor shop for scarves, statues, incense, ground pepper, and the Cambodian dance show at the Angkor Resort. Wonderful.

Cambodia really gets under your skin, I found it a very intensive, almost meditative experience. It's a very friendly and soft place, terribly poor. We enjoyed Angkor at our own pace, without rushing to see everything but taking our own time to sit and let it sink in. No need to follow the guidebooks and see a sunset here, a sunrise there. We visited at odd times and found ourselves often alone among the ruins. The rain was the most welcome element: it fills the many waterways that surround the temples, the sky darkens making it easier to look up and study the carvings, the air cools down and all one can do is stop and contemplate. That's how I spent my last half hour in Angkor; if I close my eyes, I'm still there.
