A bit at the edge of the inner town. Best to take motorcycles that are waiting at the entry drive to the hotel.

Take your own US dollars into the country, they are expensive to buy once you get there. Have some local currency to give to the children but beware as soon as one gets some cash from you, dozens more suddenly appear, a better idea is to give some money to a children's hospital to clear your conscience.
If you are travelling to Angkor Wat go there by boat it is a major experience in itself, you will no doubt fly back.

I was there on business, so mostly went to government offices. For those interested in nightlife, there is Martini's next door...

I think Phnom Penh is worth a day or two as part of a longer trip to Angkor Wat. Try renting a car from the hotel to go to the three main sites-- Tuol Sleng Museum, Killing Fields and Royal Palace. Lane 240 is a nice walk.

Not a whole lot to do outside the usual, but the S-21 torture camp and the Cheoung Ek killing field are sad yet vital destinations which should remind all of us of what life is like under totalitarian S**s, like those who many in the world are happy to turn their backs on.

All displays in museums including Choeung EK Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Torture Prison are short of explanation and description. Grand Palace with it large assembly hall is worth a visit. Walk along the Tonle Sap river and the Central Market give me the best memory of this city. If not transiting to Angkor Wat or if without other purpose, visiting Phnom Penh is mostly disappointed.

Phnom Phen is especially at night, no really a safe place. After darkness nobody should undertake footwalks throughout the city. There are some other places (northern part of Phnom Phen) which can be unsafe during daytime as well. Because of these facts I would prefer a destination/hotel next to the riverside!

Visted Royal Palace, several museums and a leisurely evening walk around the banks of the Mekong River was very pleasant and opportune to mix with city folks.

We just passed by the city to take flight back Shanghai. To my great surprise, Phnom Penh is developing very fast. In the area we live, near the Royal Palace, streets are wide and clean.
Angkor is amazing, definite worth for a visit. Some temples are to be revisited and savored...

Recommended restaurants: Foreign Correspondents Club, The Globe.
Visited the Killing Fields and Toul Sleng Museum....interesting but depressing. Went to the Russian Market and the Central Market but was not very impressed. Generallly, shopping was not good.... items overpriced. Best part of Phnom Penh was staying at the Raffles and eating at the nice restaurants along the river. 2 days here is plenty.
