Stayed at Tai Seng Hotel - Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

I first visited Phnom Penh for 2 ½ days. No more time is needed to se the main attractions as Nation Museum, Royal Palace, Toul Sleng Museum, Killing Fields and the markets. I hired a moto driver for two days to get around.
To get to Siam Reap from Phnom Penh I took a bus (price $4). The bus departed conveniently just across the road from my hotel (Tai Seng hotel). The trip took about 8 hours. The road was partly really bad, but there was contruction work going on, so hopefully it will get better. I stayed in Siem Reap for 5 ½ days. That gave me sufficient time to explore all the temples around Ankor without just rushing through. I also made a trip to the more 'remote' Banteay Srei and Kbal Spean and the Rolus group. As in Phnom Penh I hired a moto driver to get around the temple area (I paid $7 a day). If you choose not to go with a guide, a good guidebook is essential.
I usually stayed out for lunch in the temple area. The food was good and cheap. Otherwise be prepared for some hassle to buy different kinds of souvenirs, water etc.

I had the various taxis used from the airport guide it.
Phnom Penh was safer, and it was a clean town than to think of it.
There is a fashionable restaurant many along the river.

Can recommend Soho Bar at #3 St. 118. It's a welcome change if you've tired of multicolored light strings and wicker chairs.

Visited during low season. Then no need to prebook transport for sightseeing. We took a moto to the Tour Sleng Museum, but had already booked a driver for the "Killing Fields" and a tour outside Phnom Penh.
After Phnom Penh we went by air to Siem Reap to visit Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat. In Siem Reap we stayed at Yaklom Angkor Lodge, with small simple cottages and a very good Thai restaurant attached. For touring Angkor Wat we had booked a car via Siem Reap Tourist Service, with a very good English speaking driver. We were very pleased with our journey. But coming from Malaysia, we found Cambodia a bit pricey. You will spend more money than you expect.

Phnom Penh is a pleasant city and seems to get better as every year goes by. It's so nice to walk by a relatively unpolluted river in the heart of an Asian city and dine by the riverside. It's a safe city despite what some say.

The Museum, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are all worth seeing and really convenient to the FCC. Toul Sleng Genocide museum is a short moto trip away and worth the trip, although not for the sensitive.

We enjoyed our time in PP and used a driver to take us everywhere, including a long day trip to the National Museum, Palace, Toul Sleng, Russian and Central markets. Take lots of cash with you!
