Hire a car, (or motor bike, if you can drive one!) Island is small enough to get around all the worthwhile sights in a day or two. Avoid the Black Sand Beach especially if the tide is in!! But shops are good here.

Plenty of shops and restuarants nearby. Turn left out of Resort, first restuarant on right was very good (can't remember name!) Chinese food. Also Malaysian, Korean, Indian, Pakistani food available. 'Moody's Place' great for breakfast - a real ethnic experience. Lots of car hire places nearby.

Well...Langkawi is an island afterall....if you have a driver's license, a map and 100 RM, just rent a car and hit the road!
Kuah town is a nice place to visit, shop and eat...we went to this 'Prawn something' house and tried seafood. Don't quite remember the names of the dishes but the food was nice and fresh. Would go again if I have the chance.
Then try the batik art museum near the airport. Beautiful clothing and fair price(though it seemed expensive compared to other products...)...The Underwaterworld also was nice....
PS....drivers beware....don't overspeed...there are a lot of curved roads....accidents might happen if not careful....

Went to the Underwater world which was disappointing. Golf at the Datai Golf club was excellent, expensive but well worth it. Kuah Town is ok, good for a bit of shopping but nothing to look at. Island tours are ok but there is quite a bit of pollution - ie rubbish lying around and locals do not seem to be too bothered by this. Unfortunately this spoils the natural environment.

Langkawi is a truly beautiful island. I arrived by ferry, but will fly next time. Rented a car two days. Great value. Toured the island and visited the crystal factory (not to be missed - do buy a piece!) and many beaches on the northern end. Shopped in Kuah. Best was the modern shopping centre near the ferry. Went to the local market, a must! Dined in the Beach Garden one evening - great. Also dined in The Orchid, near the Beach Garden, and loved it. Enjoyable also was the Underwater Exhibition. Taxis were great value and the drivers punctual and pleasant.

Not an awful lot to do on Langkawi other than lie on the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery. To get about the island the Taxi services are really good and cheap, although not always air-conditioned. Kuah jetty is a great place for a bit of duty free shopping, although Kuah town is not really a tourist trap! Visited the Underwater World aquarium which was well worth the visit on a wet day!
