Langkawi is a most beautiful island with stunning scenery. For anyone wanting a simple beach holiday it takes some beating but there is also a lot to do and see. A trip to Gunung Raya, the highest point of the island is a must for the views and a day island hopping on the small boats is very rewarding with breath-taking views of the many uninhabited islands close by. Kuah (pron Kwa)is worth exploring and it has some very good craft stores. The island has not yet succombed to the developers and has many interesting beach bars and local food outlets which are all worth a visit to make your holiday more lively and memorable. The locals are very freindly and helpful. If you can locate Kelly or Man, two exceptioal guys, you will soon be introduced to the local folk.

Langkawi's shopping and other man-made attractions are a waste of time. By far the greatest charm is its long white peaceful beaches and mountain streams. But the emergence of Jet Skis is threatening to end this tranquility. Should they become popular on Cenang or Tengah beaches, there will no longer be any reason to travel to this destination. Go now!

There are some very good sea food restaurants near the hotel on the sea side. Don't forget to stock up on the duty free here as Langkawi is a duty free island.

Kuah is nice shopping area, not good for longer stayings because there is no nice beach.
They have nice restaurants over there and some good shopping centers. But it is all a long way from this hotel, because it is outside.

Restaurants and shops are found easily within walking distance. If you don't want to walk a lot, you can rent a bicycle at the hotel or at other shops.

Langkawi is a nice, quiet but still a little underdeveloped place. Be sure to take with you the medicine against common cold or food poisoning. If you have been unlucky to catch one of these, the nearest pharmacy is in Kuah town, twenty minutes drive (MR 14 taxi fare) from Pantai Tenang, where we stayed. Otherwise you have to visit an estabilishment called Global Clinic, next to Underwater World at Pantai Cenang, which is rather an unforgotteable experience. After catching cold I went there to get some medication. There were two ladies: one of them a receptionist, the other one a doctor (so it seemed). I asked for some simple, "over the counter" remedy for my condition. The receptionist registered my case, first by filling in a lenghtly registration form, afterwards both ladies tried to enter the information I had given them to the computer. All of this took about twenty minutes, making me regret the idea of using their services. But the end of my visit there went far beyond my expectations: all I got was six lozenges at rip-off price of MR 15 (appr.4 USD), they even couldn't find Aspirine tablets! Taxi service cheap, at fixed fares between locations. During holidays rubbish lays uncollected along the road in Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tenang, as there is almost no pavements, you have to watch your steps. Underwater World: interesting, but poor ventilation, low level of oxygen makes you feeling tired. Nice handicrafts, but about 40% more expensive than at Handicraft Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Langkawi has very limited shopping, Western food and entertainment facilities. Avoid the crocodile farm and show - the crocodile dance is pathetic and would upset many people (a handler dancing with a crocodile on his shoulders)! The Underwater World facility is excellent as is also the snorkelling or diving trips to Pulau Payar. The Malaysian people are delightful, honest and helpful. Be careful renting hire cars that - even though ordered through the hotel - are often just cars leased out from private owners or friends of the hotel staff. Surely there would be big problems in the event of an accident !

We did no tours but did go to the local shops in Kwai Town. We didn't find anything particularly well priced vs the prices in UK.
A local restaurant we would highly recommend is Bon Ton which is less than a 3 minute taxi ride from the hotel.

The locals are very friendly and laid back. Walking around at night is no problem at all. There are plenty of shops and small restaurants ( very good food) on the main road within walking distance of the resort. My only problem with them being Muslim is although you can get very cheap beer coming out your ears - no spirits are allowed - so no whiskey or rum with my dinner! Be warned! If you're a beer lover though - no probs!
We hired a motorbike to zap around the island, but given the freak monsoon, didn't get much sightseeing done. However, the Seven Pools waterfall was well worth it even in the rain - but be prepared for a hike - the first 200 yds are the worst!
