If not for the rental car that take us around,
travelling around Langkawi is quite incovenience at times.
With the rental car (quite expensive - Nissan Sentra cost Rm$110 daily as compare to JB), we
travel around the islands visiting most of the luxurious hotel (like Andarman, Tanjung Rhu resort, Berjaya resort etc..) We also visit the Underwater world and Crocodile farm but nothing special, nice to visit some of the nice beaches along Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah, Pantai Kok, Pantai Tanhjung Rhu and Pantai Datai..when driving around deserted area like the Andaman Datai Bay , beware of narrow bend and one way road..quite scary when you are approaching the hotel whereby you have to drive up a deep curving slope...but the Andaman hotel offers very exotic tropical rainforest getaway..along mid way you can have a very nice view of the Pulau Dayang Bunting lake. We also visit the Eagle square and Lagenda Park at Jetty area, the Budaya Graft and Cultural Complex, Langkawi Crystal, Yacht Club and Air Hangat Village etc.. a pity that we miss the Pulau Payar Marine park due to kids
with us may not be suitable...overrall quite enjoyable trip but whenever anything on Langkawi (e.g duty free shopping mall etc), they are talking sbout small scale type...you will not expect big shopping mall..and if you are drinker and smoker, beers are cheaper than mineral water and exercising of your lungs are very affordable.

for shopping, try the Underwater World instead of Kuah Town.

As Langkawi is a duty free island, some goods were cheaper here than the mainland. In particular, wine was affordable and beer was very cheap. The Komplex Handicraft was worth a visit with good quality products for sale although the place is much smaller than the equivalent in Kuala Lumpur. We used taxis to travel around but this could work out to be expensive if wanting to visit many different places. The island is beautiful and if we return some day we shall consider renting a car.

We travelled the island by hiring a car. The entire island can be covered in 4/5 hrs. But we reccommend to spend the entire day by going from one beach to another. Handicrafts / Galleries were best liked by us, especially the Bartik Gallery. Excellent !! Sceneic beauty of the islands and caves is fascinating. General food is good and gratfying. One can relax and enjoy.

Close to the town of Kuah where guests can get a real taste of local life, food and shopping. Great "get-away from it all" destination.

Taxis are very good value, drivers friendly and helpful. Kuah, the main city, is interesting and has good duty-free shops; Langkawi Fair is the best shopping complex. Remember to put in the decimal point when trying to get money from cash machines ie 200.00 ringits...we couldn't figure out why it wouldn't give us cash, but we were only tapping in 200.
A sunset cruise is a must, the Bon Ton restaurant five minutes from the hotel is excellent (with a very chic little shop), and golf on the Datai's course is expensive but breathtaking (carved out of rainforest). Pelangi will arrange your transport, and golf. We were told the craft centre was excellent, but did not have time to visit. Watch out for jellyfish in the water.

The beach, Pantai Cenang, is where the resort is at is beautiful. You can take long walks and swim all day in its calm blue waters. If you find the resort food too expensive for your liking, there are plenty of food outlets within walking distance outside the hotel at reasonable prices. There are also groceries store and a supermarket nearby.

Langkawi is a great destination. Beautiful, clean beaches and sea OK for swimming (unlike Penang). Get a map of local attractions, hire a car and driver for a couple of hours and you will be driven around this beautiful island and get a wonderful insight into how the local people lead their lives, where they live and work etc. Drive through lots of typical Malay villages, including fishing villages with houses right on the beach (some almost totally demolished by monsoonal high seas). There is a modern shopping centre at Kuah the main town and Eagle Square is worth a visit, to see the most gigantic sculpture of an Eagle in existence. Langkawi is a duty free island and the prices are cheaper there than in any other of the airport shops.
Two restaurants are a must to try; 1) Little India near the Waterworld complex at Pantai Cenang, and 2)The Birdcage. For Italian food try Jezebel (we didn't as we ran out of time but were told it was excellent for pasta and pizza).

Langkawi is quiet-a beach resort.Trips available and car rental, all ok.We've been before and enjoyed coning back.Could be dull for those needing party-club stuff. But the drink is cheap, and its a relaxing place.Shopping not as good as they say it is -lots of tat.Maybe boring for young families-not much to keep kids entertained.
