We visited the war remants museum, one sided but still very eye-opening, the Bin Tanh market - crazy busy but great bargains and all around the Dhong Khoi area is great shopping. Lemon Grass restaurant (just off Dhong Khoi St) had some lovely Vietnamese food and we ate in Camargue and Le Jardin French restaurants, the former somewhat more expensive but amazing food and setting.
Also worth a look is the Fine Arts Museum, set in a beautiful building (French style) and if you go down the corridors and not just the main rooms, there is a wealth of ornaments and paintings to be seen. A find are the 2 galleries selling art at the bottom of this museum.

HCMC is a great place, although traffic very hectic. When crossing the road don't hesitate or you will never make it. KHAI Silk was a great store for handbags, although expensive.

I recommend Seasons of Hanoi restaurant in Hanoi--very nice ambience, good food, friendly staff. It was recommended to us by the receptionist at the Galaxy Hotel (when we couldn't find the restaurant originally recommended to us by our hotel's receptionist).
Our shopping experience in the Old Quarter was also very interesting. We found Vietnamese silk clothing at reasonable prices, and the stores we went to (one, I think, was called Tha Anh) had friendly and helpful staff. Although they speak barely understandable English, they also speak French.

Definitely rent a bike ($1/day) so you can bike into town -- that way you're not tied to a shuttle schedule or paying for motorcycle rides every two minutes. Great internet places along the road into town. The Safari (?) restaurant just down the road is great -- owned by a Vietnamese woman and her California husband, and there's also a crab place right on the water that's meant to be lovely, although we didn't go there. On the road to town, the Gado restaurant is good. Buy as much stuff as you can -- specially lanterns, art work, ties, silk, etc. -- you'll love it when you get home and it only seems heavy now! Check out all the calisthentics on the beach at dawn -- it's really adorable.

Bin Thanh market is terrific for shopping - get there on a za um (motorbike) - fun and cheap. Visit the Mekong Delta and see Eco-tourism in action; visit the tunnels at Cu Chi for a dose of claustrophobia! Local people are warm, friendly and welcoming - enjoy!

The Sihn Cafe located in the backpack section of District 1 offers many day trips to the Mekong Delta, Chu Chi Tunnel and transfers to Cambodia. The prices are rock bottom, $7 to 15 USD. In that same area, stop by Go2 for a fresh pizza and a cold 50 cent beer. If you're backpacking, upgrade for the latest North Face or Low Alpine model pack, $15 for a 60-80 liter bag! By Dong Khoi Street there are a lot of quaint, trendy places to pick up sandwiches for lunch, coffe or fruit smoothy. Try Juice or Cafe Java. If you have time, go north on Hwy 1 to Mui Ne. There are many quality beach resorts. We stayed at Coco Beach and were very impressed. Enjoy Vietnam!

Hoi An is a very beautiful town on both the river and close to the beach. A great place to get a tailored made suit as 3 pieces costs approximately US$60 (I went to BiBi Silk in town). The cooking classes out of Hai's Cafe were very useful and the Red Bridge Restaurant is located in a beautiful setting and is very reasonably priced.

Red Bridge, Tam Tam, Cargo Club and Des Amis are restaurants we would certainly recommend. For tailored clothing try A Dong on Le Loi street (they were excellent and recommended by hotel).

T & A Silk for tailored outfits, Temple Club for lunch or dinner (great deserts downstairs, separate eatery), Bamboo Cafe by Bentan Market for refreshing and reasonable meals, Saigon Saigon Bar at Caravel Hotel for the great view of the city.

Our favourite place to visit in Asia is Hoi An ancient town. A great place to have tailor made clothes & shoes at unbelievable prices. The town is about 10 minutes drive to the resort beach area where our hotel was located.
