Cherating is not an unfamiliar destination to us. We had made several trips before. Getting there was no problem if you are driving. It took about 7-8 hours drive from Singapore (of course with a stopover for lunch). We enjoyed the scenery and able to see the locals way of life. We visited the turtle sanctuary, the Limbong Art shop for souvenirs, drove around visiting nearby hotels and resorts and had our meals at the small restaurants owned by the locals. But be exta careful driving where there are lots of cows grazing by the roadside.

We ate in the restaurant but the Thursday night market in the neighbouring fishing village is well worth a vist to try some of the local dishes. The Taxi drivers are very helpful ad will take you on a tour of the area and stop at road side vendors and help you buy local fish snack dishes and fruit. Chendor beach and the Turtle sanctaury is excellent.

Cherating beach area was definitely a better choice then the Kuantan stretch. It was more quiet and cleaner and less commercial. If you are looking the bustle of life stay away from Cherating. Don't let the travel books fool you, watching buffaloes carry fish from fishing boats at work in BESERAH just out of Kuantan is a seasonal thing. We drove all the way to find that out. The Charas Caves is a must but be prepared for a hard and treacherous climb if you have young kids, but they loved the 500m walk into the dark cave and listening to all the bats screeching.
Don't forget to check out the waterfalls around the Kuantan area. Kids had a great time swimming there as they were rather small falls and fairly safe.
All in all, you really need to have all your amenities when travelling to the the Malaysian East coast as conveniences are not easy to come by.

The beaches at Cherating are beautiful. Waters are clear and beaches are clean, not cluttered with rubbish. As there are no motorised sports available, the beach seems so serene and peaceful. It is a place for people who want to be idle and do nothing.

The resort was almost empty when we were there and as it is quite isolated. One could feel bored after a few days especially if you have no car to get out. Not to be missed is a boat trip on the Cherating river deep into the jungle. Goods places to eat and drink as well as shopping facilities at Cherating beach 4 km away.

Food at Impiana is rather expensive but there is a nice eating place - Duyong Duyong - a few mins drive after Club Med in the direction of Kuantuan. Good food and cheap, had lunch three times there during my stay and had not exhausted the food. Just outside Club Med, there is a turtle conservation observatory, free entry and you'll get to learn about the turtle conservation efforts.

Cherating is not very developed and stretches along a 15 kilometer road. A car would be very useful. Have only seen the beach near Impiana, but is beautiful (as in untouched).

The East Coast of Malaysia is BEAUTIFUL.
Impiana is easy to get to - from Kuantan, a taxi costs MR40 and takes 45 minutes, a local bus costs MR3.00 and takes 1.5 hours. The local bus is also convenient for day trips up and down the coast to Kuantan or Kemaman the nearest big towns - excellent if you want to immerse yourself in local culture, shop for food and handicrafts, other beaches, (Cherating Village is quite a fun place to visit just about 10 minutes bus ride from Impiana. It has great local food, beach bars that party into the night in high tourist season, lots of firendly people and an internet cafe)
Impaina organises trips to night markets as well.
