A car with driver can be rented for US$20/day and there are extremely knowledgable guides to take you around the temples.

The trip to Phnom Kulen is not really worth the price of the $20us entrance fee and the extra $20us for the car.

Angkor Wat is an excellent destination. Take at least 3 days, that gives you enough time to see what you have to see and to take some rest during the day. Too much information in a day is no holiday!
From the town you can choose to be driven around by car, with or without guide, motor cycle riksja, or you can rent a bicycle, also very practical and a nice area to cycle, park like environment, not too much trafic.
I can recommend to take a guide at least one day, otherwise you really miss something,

Angkor is a magic place. It is a must visit if you are in Asia. If you like photography try to go to the temples very early in the morning or after four o'clock in the afternoon so we can get a better light. We went during April, but I would try visiting Angkor in October when the water level in the lakes and rivers surrounding the temples are higher.
Don't miss visiting the center for arts & crafts where they teach the local people how to do wood-carving, sculptures in stone, different items in silk and metal work.

As a single it was very convenient (and budget friendly) to take a motor driver.
The trip to Beng Mealea is very hard (not advisable by car) but it is so worthwile. I felt it as a real privilige to be able to go there. But you'll need to endure a long and dusty way. Still it was my top experience as I had already seen the classical small and bid circuit. Kobal Spien is also worthwile and combinable with Beng Mealeng.

It was the second time that I travelled in Cambodia. We hired a car 2 days with the help of the Saphir hotel, our guide (working at Saphir hotel) was excellent(compare whith the one I've 2 years ago!). I went by motorbike to Phnom Kulen, a day excursion to a national park with waterfalls where you can swim and rest from the visit of the temples...

Siem Reap is pretty much about the temples. So do it. Angkor, the Bayon, Ta Prohm, and some of the other trendy places swarm with people; however, they are worth it. Explore a little further out and some of the smaller temples if you want to avoid the crowds. Also, don't forget to bring a passport-size photo for your Angkor passes.
