The cable car ride was quite a spectacular experience with wonderful views of the sea and mountains. We got around the island in a hired car which was relatively inexpensive (RM60 per day).

Didn't see the main city of Langkawi but the whole island is easy to get around especially if you hire a small motor bike. Duty free grog shopping is quite cheap especially at Ceneng Pantai shops and the restaurants have a great variety. Not much if you want a clubbing party till dawn type holiday.

Langkawi is a beautiful place to visit. They have more than 5 beautiful waterfalls, clean beaches, good food and not to forget on their night life.
Since it was a short vacation, we rent a car. It was very convenient as we get the car at the jetty point itself. We took a map with us. The map helps us a lot to move from one place to another.
If you love "ikan bakar" (BBQ Fish), it is best for you to go to "Pantai Chenang" (Chenang Beach). Otherwise, there are a lot of stalls selling seafood with very reasonable price in Kuah town. As for accommodation, the scenery at Awana Porto Malai Resort very peaceful and at reasonable price.
From Langkawi Jetty, one can go to Thailand with one hour ferry ride. Of course, when we reach Saturn, Thailand, we need to take a trip down to the beaches. Saturn is like a small cowboy town.

Rented a car for a day and used cabs. Rental place delivered the car. Went to Oriental Village and the waterfalls, Black Sand Beach, the mangroves, Underwater World, Langkawi Crystal, the night market and scuba diving at Pulau Payar. Recommend eating at Casa Del Mar and Pelangi Beach Resort right next door. Also ate at Prawn Village and Thailand Restaurant - ok.

Aside from the main strip of beaches (Cenang and Tengah) and Kuah Town, Langkawi is relatively untouristy (not many amenities for visitors) and most of the island is covered with padi fields and malay kampongs.
Road signages are very good so don't hesitate to hop on a scooter (which can be rented cheaply) and tour the island. This makes it easy to stop anytime and anywhere you want (beaches around the island are very beautiful). Travelling by taxi is very expensive and you're better off on a scooter or a rented car. Only be warned that petrol stations can be far and few in some areas so get a map which tells you where they are.
We had lunch at a very beautiful restaurant called Bon Ton's overlooking a padi field, down the road from the Morac International Karting track (which is great fun by the way!). The setting and prices are a bit upmarket so would be ideal as a special treat.

Langkawi is a convenient island to reach from Malaysia, Singapore or southern Thailand, and the transport to the hotel is an easy drive. Underwater exploits (i.e. Scuba diving) are disappointing on Langkawi, though, as the Straits of Malacca don't lend the cleanest water.

Beautiful island! Definitely go to Pulau Payar as a day trip. Utilise the expensive tours as there is a big difference in terms of quality. I went with Langkawi Coral which is the premier provider there. They were excellent! Food is plentiful if a little expensive, cars are widely available for rent. I got a Proton Iswara at 50 ringgit/day. I think I could've gotten it at a lower price. :)

We found some excellent restaurants nearby - Bon Ton, T.Jay's & The Lighthouse - breakfast - Breakfast Cafe & Red Tomato. We didn't eat in the hotel restaurants as we were keen to explore elsewhere but our son enjoyed the food from the room service menu some evenings.
We hired a car from the restaurant across the road from the hotel - 6 days RM600 - 1.6ltr - excellent value - enabled us to have a good look around the island. Joined the island tour that took us to the Marine Park well organised, supplied lunch, only complaint was there were too many people trying to enjoy the same spot.
For those who want to avoid the crowds swim to the left of the pier - you'll be herded to the right because that's where they give you lunch. Good selection of tropical fish but not much colour in coral. Our 13 year old son enjoyed the go kart track near the airport, shopping in Kuah, jet skiing, snorkelling at the marine park, sliding down the water falls at Telaga Tujuh, cable car ride nearby, bird park, underwater world & snake park.

Stayed at Tanjung Sanctuary Langkawi - Langkawi, Malaysia.

We hired a car one day and circumnavigated the island, stopping at Tanjung Rhu beach for lunch and swimming. We also walked up to the seven wells water fall and rode on the cable car. The cable car held beautiful sights and was clean and new. We went to a Malaysian local art and craft store and also to Cenang beach for lunch. Great Island, great swimming and lovely scenery.

The 4-wheel drive jeep is not clean enough before hired to us. The road signs are clear enough. Seven Well is highly recommended but unfortunately we could not find Barn Thai Restuarant due to road sign problem, I heard it is very special.
