We took the 4hour North Borneo Railway train ride into the heartlands & what made it more special was the interaction with the other passengers from all over the world. The seafood eatery at Tg Aru beachfront was superb & reasonably priced.

My advise to travellers is not to hire private cars not until the transportation fare is made known to you. I requested for a transport from Hot Poring Spring to Perkasa Hotel and was told it is around M$65 or so. So, thought that should be alright, got on the transport, which is a private car and was not made known before, travel to Perkasa which took about 60 minutes drive from Hot Poring. When I got down the car and asked for the fare, the driver said M$120.00!? No question asked as I do not want to pick up an argument, I paid him M$120.00. I was shocked when the next day I booked a taxi from Perksasa Hotel to Beverly Hotel in Kota Kinabalu which took 2 hours of drive cost me just M$60.00. WOW!?!? So learnt my lesson from this trip.

Use hotel shuttle bus to and from city. KK has plenty of inexpensive restaurants. Shopping in Malaysia is excellent value and of high quality. With little effort and a visit to Sabah Tourism Office, one can arrange own visits to places of interest at a fraction of price of organised tours.

Restaurant served good food and was clean. Staff was good. I have rented a car at 80 ringlets a day and will be travelling along the coast and inland from here so I can't say much. I have driven to some beach resorts and the beaches are great and prices there reasonable

Kota Kinabalu was only a transit point for us between climbing and diving, so we only had a short stay at the hotel. But we ate at a Chinese food restaurant, Canton House, that was recommended by the hotel, and had great dim sum and soup. We then wandered around the downtown area, bought ice cream, and enjoyed people-watching in the city. It was easy to hail a cab back to the hotel from the downtown area.

There are lots of things to go an see in the local area - it might be worth hiring a car and driver - this allows you to see sites that the tour bus doesn't go to ( and you can see them at a pace that suits you). You should also go out to some of the beaches on the islands - great for snorkelling.

KK is OK - a bit of a concrete jungle after Kuching though. Get out to the islands from the KK jetty - beautiful.
Taxi drivers operate on a fixed price basis and collude to make sure that the fixed prices are about 3 times what they should be!!

The 5 island tour is definately worth going on, although the snorkeling does not compare to over places we have visited, however the beaches are great.
The North Borneo express is a must if you are into steam trains and nostalgia for the old days of the Empire.
Visit the Rasa Ria resort for the Orang Utans, but do NOT stand under them while they are playing on the overhead ropes!
Excellent seafood at the KK Seafood Market.

There is not much to do in Kota Kinabalu Town apart from the beach and water activities. However Mount Kinabalu is just 2 hours away and the park is fabulous. The trek to the top is hard work, but worth it. You do need cold weather gear, waterproofs and good boots in order to make the climb. Book your trek well ahead of time.
Taxis are fairly cheap but don't always have meters.

There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. Although if you are planning on eco travel such as visiting the turtle islands and the Orangutan Rehab. centre in Sepilok you would be better off planning to stay in Sandakan for a few nights. It is possible to visit Sepilok in a day trip but it does involve a early morning flight which results in a very long day. Albiet well worth it though. To visit other attractions such as the turtle islands or the Caves you have to stay over night. Getting around is very easy.
There are some waterfront restaurants that you can walk to from the resort, or the hotel has a shuttle that takes you into town. It is only a 10 minute trip and taxis are cheap and abundant so they are also a good option. There are some great Indian, Chinese and Thai restaurants in town and plenty of interesting sights and shopping. Western food is abundant also plus the varitey of restaurants within the resort would cater to most peoples needs. The Italian restaurant is supposedly the best in town and we were not dissappointed. If you are looking to party it may not be the place to go the nightlife in KK is fairly laid back and your options are minimal.
